❚ Carly Paracholski of Sisler High School was named Athlete of the Meet and the winner of the Lyle Bryson Award at the 2011 Boeing Indoor Classic Track and Field Meet on Saturday. About 1,000 athletes competed in the age-group events in the two-day meet at the University of Manitoba Max Bell Fieldhouse.
Paracholski, a Grade 12 student, set a meet record in the female junior (ages 18-19) 400-metre race with her time 56.03 seconds.
The winners of the Keg Record Setters of the Meet awards were Julia Zrinyi of Stride Ahead Tough Track and Michael Akins of Winnipeg Optimist Athletics.
Zrinyi set a meet record in the female youth (16-17) 1,500 metres with her time of 4:35.29 while Akins set a meet record in the male junior 60 metres with a time of 6.94 seconds.
“There were about 15 records set, which was just outstanding,” said meet chairman Larry Switzer. Other meet records included: Victoria Tachinski of H.G. Izatt, in the female bantam (12-13) 60m with a time of 8.44 and in the 300m with a time of 43.03 and Josh Ateah Ahlbaum of Stride Ahead in the male midget (15-16) 60m with a time of 7.44 and the 300m with a time of 37.67.
Trina Ready of WOA broke her own record in the female midget 1200m with a time of 3:47.57.
In the feamle youth pole vault, Samantha Allegro of WOA set a record of 3.20m while WOA’s Melissa Richards set a record of 3.45m in the female junior pole vault.
Other notable performances included Melissa Kitching of WOA who placed first in the female junior 60m with a time of 7.94 while Paracholski placed first in the female junior 200m with a time of 25.51. Akins placed first in the junior male 200m with a time of 23.11 and Zrinyi took first in the female youth 800m with her time of 2:15.09.
❚ The Manitoba High School Athletic Association provincial curling champions were decided on Saturday in Dauphin.
In the girls’ division, Dakota Collegiate defeated Morden 8-2.
In the boys’ division, Linden Christian defeated Warren 7-2.
In other MHSAA news, the wild card teams for next weekend’s 2011 Milk AAAA Hockey Provincial Championship were decided Saturday at the MTS Iceplex. Kelvin Clippers and River East Kodiaks will advance to the provincials March 11, 12 and 14 at the MTS Iceplex and St. James Civic Centre.
❚ The University of Manitoba Bisons men’s hockey team saw its season end in Edmonton on Saturday. The Bisons were defeated by the No. 3-ranked Alberta Golden Bears 2-0 in the best-of-three Canada West semifinal series.
Alberta shut out the Bisons on Friday 4-0 and edged the Manitoba team 2-1 on Saturday with Del Cowan notching Manitoba’s only goal.
❚ ON TAP: The Winnipeg High School Hockey League city championships go today with all three divisions playing final games at the MTS IcePlex.
At 3:30 p.m., the Fort Richmond Centurions will meet the St. James Jimmies; the Garden City Fighting Gophers take on the Shaftesbury Titans at 5:50 p.m.; and the Oak Park Raiders and the St. Paul’s Crusaders will meet in the Platinum Promotions division final at 8:30 p.m.
