TORONTO — Four years after exiting the Gold Cup in a disputed semifinal loss to the U.S., Canada will renew its soccer rivalry with the powerful Americans at the 2011 edition of the CONCACAF championship.

The Canadian men, ranked 80th in the world, will open their Gold Cup campaign June 7 against the 18th-ranked Americans in Group C play at Detroit’s Ford Field.

Canada will then play Guadeloupe at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla., on June 11 and No. 60 Panama at newly named Livestrong Stadium in Kansas City on June 14.

Guadeloupe, a French possession since 1635, is unranked because it is not a member of FIFA.

Canada lost to the Americans in 2007 at Chicago’s Soldier Field when Mexican referee Benito Archundia disallowed a tying goal by Atiba Hutchinson for offside in the dying seconds.

Canada was also the victim of another controversial decision in Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field in 2009, losing 1-0 to Honduras in the quarter-finals on a disputed penalty.

Of course, there are good Gold Cup memories as well. Canada won the tournament in 2000, under coach Holger Osieck.

Canadian coach Stephen Hart, who was also at the helm in 2007 and 2009, welcomes the chance for such big name opposition in the tournament opener.

“At some point, you’ve got to play teams like the U.S., especially in the Gold Cup,” he said.

“I’m really looking forward to this game,” he added.

The matchup with the U.S. will also give the Canadians a change to gauge themselves against a team that has attended the last six World Cup finals and currently sits atop the confederation rankings.

Canada is 1-6-2 since the last Gold Cup.
