Marco Bustos is the one that got away for Valour FC.
The attacking midfielder from Winnipeg tormented his former club on Sunday afternoon at Starlight Stadium in Langford, B.C. with three assists to lead Pacific FC to a 3-2 victory over Valour.
After spending the 2019 campaign with Valour, Bustos took his talents out West to Pacific and Winnipeg’s professional soccer club has been feeling the sting ever since. Sunday’s defeat drops Valour to 0-1-1 on the season and is now 1-1-10 against Pacific all-time. Pacific, last season’s Canadian Premier League champions, improve to 3-0-0 in 2022.
Shortly after Manny Aparicio opened the scoring for the home side in the 20th minute, Valour defender Tony Mikhael was given a red card for getting his foot up and booting Pacific’s Nathan Mavila in the face. Pacific quickly took advantage of Valour being down a man as seven minutes later, Bustos sent a beautiful crossing pass to Alejandro Díaz Liceága for the finish to make it 2-0. Valour would catch a break in the 43rd minute with a Pacific own goal to head into the half down 2-1. But Bustos was back at it in the second half, this time making a nifty pass in the 56th minute to Josh Heard, who found the the net to put Pacific up 3-1.
The only thing that didn’t go Bustos’s way on Sunday was his penalty kick at the end of the first half, as Valour goalkeeper Jonathan Sirois made a clutch save. Valour forward Moses Dyer scored on a meaningless penalty kick right before the final whistle to end the match at 3-2.
Valour will be visitors again next Sunday when they meet Atlético Ottawa before their home opener on May 1 against Forge FC.
