TORONTO – A suspect is wanted for murder in the unprovoked shooting of a 15-year-old Toronto boy last June, and two other men have been arrested in the case, police said Thursday.
Det. Sgt. Phil Campbell said 20-year-old Abdul Yeberebaba is wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for second-degree murder and is asking anyone with information on his whereabouts to contact police.
Two others accused of being accessories to Jahkai Jack’s murder after the fact – a 19-year-old from Toronto and a 21-year-old who was arrested in British Columbia – were taken into custody earlier this week.
Toronto police said last year that Jack was killed after he and some friends met with another group of people, which led to a verbal exchange between Jack and a man who went on to pull out a gun and shoot the teenager.
Jack was pronounced dead at a hospital and the suspect fled the scene before officers arrived, police said at the time.
Campbell told reporters Thursday that Jack was not involved in gangs or criminal activity, he was “simply a young person meeting friends on a summer night” when he was shot and killed.
“His family continues to live with the unimaginable loss of a child whose life was just beginning,” Campbell said.
During the press conference, Campbell addressed Yeberebaba directly and asked the suspect to surrender to police.
“You know we’re looking for you,” Campbell said. “Do the right thing. Turn yourself in.”
The allegations have not been tested in court.
