ULUKHAKTOK – Police say a woman has been arrested after a school on one of the northernmost edges of Canada was threatened with a mass shooting.
RCMP in Ulukhaktok, a remote community in the Northwest Territories, say concerned residents came forward Sunday about online posts alluding to committing a mass shooting.
Mounties say officers later arrested the woman at her home and found no trace of any firearms.
They also say it’s not believed that the suspect has any access to firearms.
The 24-year-old accused was released on conditions, including a firearms prohibition and a condition not to attend the school, and is to appear in court at a later date.
School safety has been a high-profile issue in Canada after a mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, B.C., that left nine people, including the shooter, dead.
RCMP spokesman Cpl. Josh Seaward said in an email that the N.W.T. threat drew a “clear nexus” to Tumbler Ridge.
He also said the motive for it is still under investigation.
“We can confirm however that the accused is not an employee or student at the school,” said Seaward.
