Ontario Premier Doug Ford says a York Region resident who shot and injured an alleged home invader “should have shot him a couple more times.”
The resident used a legally owned and properly stored gun in the early morning incident Tuesday and York regional police said they would not lay charges. Ford went a step further.
“Congratulations,” he said. “I’m glad you shot the guy.”
A 24-year-old man who was shot is now facing multiple charges, including robbery with a firearm, police announced Wednesday.
Ford was asked at an unrelated press conference to weigh in on the case, as he was highly critical of charges — that were later withdrawn — against a man in Lindsay, Ont., who had been accused of assaulting an alleged home intruder last year.
“Congratulations for shooting this guy,” he said in a second round of praise. “(You) should have shot him a couple more times, as far as I’m concerned.”
He then went on an extended rant about judges, who he said are only interested in protecting Charter rights of criminals instead of victims, suggesting they are a factor in an increase in home invasions.
Statistics from York regional police and Toronto police show the number of home invasion robberies rising over the past five years.
NDP Leader Marit Stiles suggested it’s rich for Ford, who has been premier for eight years, to bemoan a five-year rise in crime.
“If people in Ontario feel less safe today, then that’s on him as the premier of this province,” she said.
“For him to be telling people to shoot each other rather than him fixing the problems … to me, it seems like more nonsense, frankly, very irresponsible nonsense.”
