LETHBRIDGE – Five people have been charged with first-degree murder after police in southern Alberta say a man was forcibly confined in an apartment in a targeted attack last month.

Lethbridge Police say in a news release the 27-year-old victim was in the apartment with a 22-year-old woman early on March 27, and in the hours before his death multiple people arrived and confined, assaulted and choked him.

Officers responded to a 911 call about an assault and found the man unresponsive, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say he was a resident of Lethbridge but they will not be releasing his name.

Over the next few days, four men between the ages of 27 and 43 were arrested, and a 22-year-old woman turned herself in to police on April 2.

Lethbridge Police say all five knew the man and evidence suggests they all actively participated in the murder, but police would not say why the man was attacked.

Police say the woman who was in the apartment with the victim is the same woman who is now among the accused, but would not comment about the nature of their relationship.

No one else is being sought in connection with the murder, police said, but also noted the investigation is ongoing.

All of the accused remain in custody.
