MISSISSAUGA – Toronto police have charged three people, including a teenage girl, alleged to have been in a car with a 19-year-old man who was shot dead by an officer on Thursday.
Police say they were investigating a report of a person with a gun in The Esplanade area late Wednesday afternoon and tracked the suspect’s vehicle to Mississauga.
They say officers tried to stop the car and its occupants, but the suspect tried to get away and the car struck a plainclothes officer.
Ontario’s police watchdog, which launched an investigation into the incident, said Thursday that three unmarked police cruisers collided with the car shortly after midnight and one officer shot into the vehicle, hitting the 19-year-old driver.
The Special Investigations Unit said the driver died at the scene and the three other people in the car were arrested. It said an officer was also taken to hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
In a news release issued Friday, police say a 23-year-old from Toronto, a 19-year-old from Mississauga and a 17-year-old girl are each facing multiple firearms charges.
