MONTREAL – Montreal police say they are investigating two separate suspected femicides in the city in the same neighbourhood over a span of three days.

Police said a 41-year-old woman was killed on Monday in the Villeray—Saint-Michel—Parc-Extension borough of Montreal.

Officers were called to an apartment on 39th Street at around 2:25 p.m., where they found the woman and a 35-year-old man, who was seriously injured.

The man was taken to the hospital in serious condition, and police consider him a person of interest in the investigation.

Police said the 41-year-old woman and the 35-year-old man were in a relationship.

The killing comes after a 44-year-old woman was found dead Saturday in an apartment in the same borough, in a case Montreal police are also investigating as a suspected femicide.

Quebec premier Christine Fréchette called the situation “disconcerting” Tuesday during a press conference in Montreal, saying violence against women appears to be persisting and even worsening.

“We’ve adopted several measures,” Fréchette told reporters, pointing to efforts to increase funding for women’s shelters. “It’s important that we support women in serious need and fight violence against women.”

Fréchette said her thoughts are with the families of the women and that the province needs to support people facing threats and violence.
