The suspected gunman, Anders Behring Breivik, used special bullets designed to disintegrate inside the body and cause maximum internal damage, the head of surgery at Ringriket Hospital in northwest Oslo said Sunday. “These bullets more or less exploded inside the body,” Dr. Colin Poole said. “It’s caused us all kinds of extra problems in dealing with the wounds they cause… ” Poole said surgeons treating 16 gunshot victims have recovered no full bullets.

Authorities revealed that one of Breivik’s first victims on the island was an off-duty police officer the camp had hired to provide security in his spare time.

Police still did not release the names of any victims, but they were mourned Sunday. Norway’s King Harald V, his wife, Queen Sonja, and Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg were part of the crowd packed into Oslo Cathedral. People who could not fit inside the grand church, which was strewn with flowers and candles, huddled under umbrellas amid drizzling rain.

In London, the leader of one of Britain’s largest Muslim groups said mosques are being vigilant in the wake of the attacks. Mohammed Shafiq said he was talking to European Muslim leaders and police about security.

Breivik will be arraigned today. His attorney said Sunday his client asked for an open court hearing “because he wants to explain himself.” It was unclear whether a judge would allow the media to cover the hearing.

On a Fort Richmond street outside the Norwegian Consulate Sunday, a handful of people lit candles and sang Amazing Grace to mark their sympathy. Provincial Liberal candidate for Fort Richmond, Dustin Hiles, organized the last-minute Winnipeg vigil. An opera singer who lived in Copenhagen for three months last year led the service.
