One man’s totally subjective rankings after six weeks of play (last week’s rank in parentheses):

1. (1) MONTREAL ALOUETTES (5-1) — Hung on for win over the Riders and still the best team in the land.

2. (2) SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS (4-2) — Valiant effort in Montreal, but some defensive issues.

3. (3) CALGARY STAMPEDERS (5-1) — Just a solid squad with few holes.

4. (4) TORONTO ARGONAUTS (4-2) — That win in Edmonton has more and more drinking Jim Barker’s Kool-Aid.

5. (6) HAMILTON TIGER-CATS (2-4) — Ready to take that next step to respectability?

6. (5) WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS (2-4) — Can’t win the tight ones right now and it’s costing them big time.

7. (7) EDMONTON ESKIMOS (1-5) — Next four games feature three against the Stamps and one vs. the Riders. Hello.

8. (8) B.C. LIONS (1-5) — Next three games feature road trips to Saskatchewan and Montreal and another home date vs. the Stamps. Hello again.

JUICY NUMBERS

The Lions are turning to their third starting quarterback in seven games this week as veteran Jarious Jackson will take the first snap in Regina, replacing Travis Lulay who stepped in for an injured Casey Printers. By the way, the Lions don’t expect Printers back until Aug. 27… Of all the retro jerseys trotted out over the last couple of years, our biggest thumbs up goes to the Alouettes ’70s look showcased last week. Great look. And we’ll say it again, the Bombers should go back to the old royal blue jerseys with the ‘W’ on the helmet. Come to think of it, the last time this franchise won a championship it was with that combo… Titus Ryan broke his thumb in Sunday’s Dallas-Cincy Hall of Fame Game, meaning he could be put on injured reserve and be lost to both the Cowboys and Bombers — should he have been released — for awhile… As if the Esks weren’t already hooped, how about this: they head into Calgary this week without Fred Stamps, their leading receiver, after he dislocated his shoulder and then had it pop back into place in the loss to Toronto… Good point raised by Edmonton Sun columnist Terry Jones this week: the Esks fired offensive co-ordinator Rick Worman when they were 5-4 last year. Since then the team is 5-11… Juicy stat: Calgary head coach and GM John Hufnagel is now 8-0 against his old boss, Wally Buono.
