Hey there, time traveller!

BRANDON’S Rob Fowler captured his berth into next month’s men’s curling provincials over the weekend — and he did it while lying on a beach in Hawaii.
With Fowler vacationing in the Pacific, the rest of his team (with third Allan Lyburn moving up to handle the skipping duties) put together an impressive run at the Manitoba Curling Tour Championship in Morris to capture their Safeway Championship berth.
Although the Fowler squad ultimately lost the men’s MCT championship final — 6-5 to Manitoba curling’s other Lyburn brother, Willie — they still earned the berth into February’s Safeway Championship in Beausejour.
Willie Lyburn (with James Kirkness, Alex Forrest and Greg Melnichuk) already had a berth and by advancing to the final, the Fowler squad became the furthest advancing team that still required the berth and was eligible.
The only other team that fit those criteria to make it to the eight-team playoff round was Winnipeg’s Mark Franklin, but he bowed out of berth contention in the semifinals with a 5-2 loss to Willie Lyburn.
The Fowler team (configured for this weekend as Allan Lyburn, Richard Daneault, Derek Samagalski and Ross Granger) had been the most prominent of the Manitoba men’s teams still seeking a Safeway Championship berth.
Meanwhile, Winnipeg’s Chelsea Carey captured the women’s MCT championship in what may prove to be a preview of the women’s provincials in Altona later this month.
Carey (with third Kristy Jenion, second Kristen Foster and lead Lindsay Titheridge) defeated defending champion Jill Thurston 7-4 in the quarter-finals and then defending Canadian champion Cathy Overton-Clapham 7-5 in the semifinals, before dropping Winnipeg’s Kim Link 6-4 in the championship final.
Carey, Overton-Clapham and Thurston will in all likelihood be the top three seeds at the Manitoba Scotties Tournament of Hearts, which begins Jan. 26 in Altona.
