TORONTO – A major subplot to Saturday’s CFL game between the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Toronto Argonauts will be the play of Argos QB Steven Jyles.
Jyles was traded to the Argos by Bombers GM Joe Mack this past off-season and after missing 11 games with a shoulder injury will now have his first crack at his old team.
“You always want to beat your old team and in particular its guys who have left the Blue Bombers really want to win,” said Bombers defensive tackle Doug Brown, holding court with the media at a downtown Toronto hotel this afternoon. “It’s like a scorned lover. It seems like all these guys, Bryan Clarke when he left, now Jyles and the biggest is Kevin Glenn. They won’t tell you they want to beat you more than anyone else but they do. Have you seen the smile on Glenn’s face when he does something big against us? Remember his doggies all jumping in that boat in our endzone? I’ve never seen anything more sickening than that from a Blue Bombers perspective.”
True to form, Jyles said no biggie when quizzed about Saturday’s game against his old mates.
“I don’t have any hostility toward those guys, I don’t hate any of those guys, it’s part of the game and the truth of the matter is, we lost a lot of close ball games so it’s easier to blame the quarterback or say the quarterback’s the reason,” said Jyles, following a brief workout with the Argos on a rainy day in Hogtown. “I got to do a better job of not putting myself in the same position here.”
The Argo will celebrate the 1991 Grey Cup champion team that included Matt Dunigan, Rocket Ismail, Pinball Clemons and Carl Braizley on Saturday night. A number of the ’91 Argos were at practice today and addressed the team following a brief workout.
The Bombers enter the game with a league leading 8-3 mark while the Argos are last with a 2-9 record.
