Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 25/09/2011 (5420 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.
WINNIPEG — Carl Volny was on crutches, thanks to a knee injury.
Alex Brink’ s non-throwing shoulder feels better, he says, but he was moving rather gingerly through the James Richardson International Airport Sunday morning.
On that subject, a concerned Doug Brown wasn’t sure about his injured shoulder.
Those are just three of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers dealing with injuries following the wacky 25-24 loss to the Toronto Argonauts at Rogers Centre Saturday night. The club arrived safely back in Winnipeg in one piece — some good news there — but there was little update on the medical front.
“Seven guys — the trainers will look at them and we’ll evaluate them. Some of them will have to get looked at by the doctors. We’ll have more information (Monday),” head coach Paul LaPolice said at the airport.
Until then, here’s what we know:
– Quarterback Buck Pierce aggravated his ribs in the game to the point where he thought he couldn’t move around well enough to be effective. That should send off some alarm bells in Bomberland regarding his status for next weekend, as the quarterback played the last two games with the same injury.
– Backup Alex Brink suffered a left shoulder injury. He called it “a sprain” and wasn’t sure what his status would be for Friday night, when the Bombers (8-4) take on the Montreal Alouettes (7-5) in an East division first place showdown.
– Running backs Fred Reid and Volny both have knee injuries.
– Brown and Brink aren’t the only Bombers dealing with shoulder problems. Offensive lineman Brendon LaBatte is also dealing with the same injury.
– Defensive lineman Rodney Fritz suffered a hamstring injury in the contest.
LaPolice wouldn’t speculate on the severity of any of the injuries, nor did he want to put a timetable on recoveries. He also wasn’t interested in pinning the loss on the injury bug, pointing out that his club had four turnovers throughout the course of the evening.
“We made too many mistakes, we should have won that game,” he said.
“Even with all the injuries.”
The Bombers are taking today and Monday off before returning to practice Tuesday. Winnipeg has lost three of its last four games.
