NDP Leader Greg Selinger promised a new MRI for the Grace Hospital Friday, which he said would help bring down wait times across the city.

The Grace, whose fate was a hot topic last election, will be able to do 2,000 scans per year.

The MRI will cost $6.5 million.

Also on Friday, the Tories promised to spend $4.2 million to overhaul the St. James Civic Centre, adding a second ice rink, 30 daycare spaces and a fitness room.

The addition would also house the St. James Assiniboia 55+ Centre, now cramped at the Deer Lodge Centre.

The cash would be part of the party’s $20-million community investment fund, a previous promise.

Liberal Leader Jon Gerrard said Thursday he wants to phase out the province’s payroll tax for universities and colleges with the ultimate goal of eliminating it completely for all businesses.

He said the tax, brought in by the NDP in the 1980s, hurts business growth and is a reason why few companies relocate their head offices to Manitoba.

He said the first-year loss in revenue for the province for the first step of phasing out the payroll tax for universities and colleges would be $6.2 million.
