A three-win day vaulted Alberta’s Kurt Balderston into the lead on Tuesday at the 2012 Canadian mixed curling championship in Sudbury, Ont.
The team from Grande Prairie beat a pair of contenders and an upstart team to improve to 8-1 through 12 draws.
Balderston scored four in the second end and three in the seventh in a 9-5 win over New Brunswick’s Sylvie Robichaud in the morning and followed it up with a 7-6 win over Manitoba’s Sean Grassie in the afternoon. He opened his game with Nunavut’s Ed Sattelberger in the evening draw by scoring five in the first and cruised to an 11-4 win.
Robichaud is alone in second, one game back of Balderston after beating Gary Alcock of Newfoundland and Labrador 7-4 in the night draw.
Five teams head into Wednesday’s action with three losses, including Grassie, who scored an important 8-7 win over Saskatchewan’s Jason Ackerman on Tuesday night. Grassie tied the game with two in the ninth and stole the winning point in the 10th to improve to 6-3.
Ackerman is also 6-3 after winning just once in three starts on Tuesday. He beat Scott Hamilton of Yukon 9-5, but lost 9-3 to Quebec’s Martin Ferland and then fell to Grassie.
Ferland and Ontario’s Mark Homan are also 6-3, while Doug Marshall of British Columbia is 5-3. Marshall was an 11-2 winner over Sattelberger, but was upset 6-3 by Alcock in the afternoon.
