Canadian Forces Search and Rescue technician (SAR tech) at 17 Wing Winnipeg

Accomplishments: With Remembrance Day around the corner, please take a moment to be thankful for Canada’s SAR techs. In your worst moment, facing the most danger, it is a SAR tech like Ferguson who will come for you. SAR techs are the highly-trained, multi-skilled people who parachute from aircraft into open water, rappel down mountainsides and deep-water dive. Whatever it takes to save you, these people will do it, and put their own lives on the line without hesitation. Ferguson, a native of Ajax, Ont., has been posted at 17 Wing for the past 16 months. He is one of 12 SAR techs at 17 Wing and one of 167 in Canada. He has served in the military for 11 years, four as a medic and the last seven as a SAR tech. After high school he worked briefly as a snowmaker at Lake Louise, where he met various rescue personnel and heard about the SAR tech career. He joined the military and embarked on his path, which includes intense mental and physical demands in training and duties, each day. Ferguson has worked 60 missions in the past six years, including Haiti in 2010 after the earthquake.

“Why I wanted to do this is I wanted to help people,” Ferguson said. “With the way that I am, an adrenaline-focused individual, it was really a good fit. A lot of times when we go out, there’s nobody else that will go in to do these rescues. I get to try to be that hand for somebody when nobody else is there for them.”

Ferguson said SAR techs “love our job and each other and although a humble breed, we enjoy when people take an interest in what we do.”

1. Favourite workout?

Lifting, climbing and CrossFit. My favourite CrossFit workout is ‘Fight Gone Bad:’ which is as many repetitions as possible at five stations in five minutes, three to five rounds. Wall-ball with 20-lb ball and 10-foot target, sumo deadlift high pull with 75 pounds, box jumps on 20-inch box, push-press with 75 pounds and rowing.

2. Favourite workout song?

War by System of a Down.

3. Fitness tip?

I just think of the people I don’t want to let down or who might rely on me and it motivates me.

4. What’s in your fridge?

It’s what’s not in my fridge, thanks to Kelly and Milly’s farm near Stony Mountain! I work on their farm on my days off and in turn, they feed me. A nice trade of services! No grains, gluten, dairy or legumes. Lots of organic fruits, veggies, eggs and copious amounts of meat.

5.What’s your guilty pleasure?

Subway foot-long sandwiches, large amounts of sushi and I’ve really been craving Kraft Dinner lately!

Rain causing poor harvest conditions for farmers

Connor McDowell 5 minute read 2:00 AM CDT

BRANDON — Farmers are dealing with poor harvest conditions owing to the high amount of rain this month.

Brandon had received 74.7 millimetres of rain by Sept. 15, a spokesperson for Environment and Climate Change Canada said Wednesday. The amount is equal to 173 per cent of average rainfall for Brandon.

The wet conditions are causing crop loss and delays in harvesting, several Westman farmers said this week.

“At this point, it (could be) six figures of loss. And that all happens in days,” Cassandra Lepp, a Rivers-area wheat and canola farmer, said. “We have good crops out there, and they are disappearing.”

Jets suspend goaltender Hellebuyck for failure to report to training camp

The Canadian Press 2 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 10:02 PM CDT

WINNIPEG - The Winnipeg Jets suspended goaltender Connor Hellebuyck on Wednesday night for failing to report to training camp.

The team said general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff would address the media Thursday morning. It did not specify the length of the suspension for the U.S. Olympic star.

Hellebuyck, a three-time Vezina Trophy winner and 2025 Hart Trophy winner as NHL MVP, publicly requested a trade from the team on Aug. 27.

In a statement posted on X by his agent, Ray Petkau, Hellebuyck said he had privately requested a trade “several months ago” and that he gave the organization time to address it “quietly and respectfully.”

Sweeney’s sexist U.S. gambling-site ad isn’t the real problem

Dan Lett 5 minute read Yesterday at 1:33 PM CDT

Until very recently, there was no reason to connect actress and model Sydney Sweeney with online sports betting. But the degrees separating these two culture trends evaporated in short order this week.

Sweeney, a pop culture icon who is a source of endless speculation in political circles, made a big splash with a provocative advertising campaign for Novig, a new-generation sports gambling site in the United States. In a promotional video, Sweeney appears largely nude, with strategically placed sports equipment and her long, blonde hair providing just enough cover to keep from being classified as pornography.

“Think you know sports?” Sweeney says seductively in the opening of the video, with two footballs hiding her breasts. “Prove it.”

Novig is a “peer-to-peer” gambling app that allows people south of the border to bet against each other on the outcomes of professional sports, as opposed to betting against “the house,” as is the case with traditional sports books. And it just so happens that Sweeney, either from a direct investment or as payment for her participation in the ad campaign, is now an equity partner in Novig.

Storied photojournalist inducted into Media Roll of Honour

Taylor Allen 5 minute read Tuesday, Sep. 15, 2026

If you’re a longtime hockey fan from around these parts, chances are you’ve seen the photo.

It’s an iconic snapshot of Ulf Nilsson and Anders Hedberg carrying the Avco Cup together on the ice after helping the Winnipeg Jets win the World Hockey Association’s top prize in 1978.

The person behind the camera was the late, great Jon Thordarson, who was inducted into the Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association’s Media Roll of Honour on Tuesday inside the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame.

And while they say every picture tells a story, there’s also a darn good story about what happened after Thordarson hit the shutter button.
