Bomb squad investigates Canada Post facility on Nairn

An evacuation of the Nairn Avenue postal depot has ended and workers have returned to work.

The depot was evacuated this morning when workers discovered two suspicious packages.

Police have not responded to media yet but it appears to have been another false alarm.

Police should use X-rays and sniffing dogs to do a security sweep of all post office depots in the city, the postal union says.

That would not only ensure safety of staff but the public as well, said Todd Jarema, regional officer of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers.

“It’s been fairly nerve-wracking” for postal workers, Jarema said.

There has been a rash of bomb scares in Winnipeg in recent days since it was discovered three bombs were sent to Winnipeg people. Two bombs were deactivated, one exploded and seriously injured a lawyer, and other scares have turned out to be false alarms.

Three depots have been evacuated this week due to suspicious packages.

There are five depots in the city. Canada Post employs about 1600 people in the province, Jarema said.

Guido Amsel, 49, faces 11 charges, including two counts of attempted murder in connection with mailing three bombs.
