Carruthers sparks Ferbey foursome at WCT bonspiel

Winnipeg’s Reid Carruthers is into the playoff round at an $81,000 World Curling Tour event in Lloydminster.

Carruthers was brought in as a replacement on the weekend for Randy Ferbey vice-skip David Nedohin — who sat this event out — and the new chemistry clicked immediately with the retooled foursome advancing into today’s quarterfinals.

Now comes the tough test, however — Carruthers, Ferbey and the rest of the foursome will face defending world champion Kevin Martin this morning.

Manitoba’s Daley Peters squandered his chances to get into today’s playoffs in Lloydminster, losing back-to-back qualifier games Sunday night to find himself out of the bonspiel.

That was the same fate experienced by Winnipeg’s Chelsea Carey at a major women’s tour event in Saskatoon as Carey also lost back-to-back qualifying games.

Winnipeg’s Karen Porritt was also eliminated after losing a C-side qualifier Sunday night, leaving defending world champion Jennifer Jones as the only Manitoba rink still playing in Saskatoon in today’s playoffs.

Closer to home, they’re also into the playoffs today in Swan River at the $40,000 White’s Drug Store Classic. Four Manitoba rinks have qualified — Brandon’s Allan Lyburn and Kelly Skinner, Swan River’s Brent Scales and Ste. Anne’s Murray Woodward.

Saskatchewan’s Randy Bryden and Joel Jordison, USA’s Craig Disher and Shaun Joyce round out the field.
