Dear Mike,
I have just inherited this old CBC microphone from an uncle who worked at CBC years ago. It is made by Western Electric and measures 12 inches (30 centimetres) tall. It is made of cast iron and weighs about 10 pounds. I have not tested it to see if it works. What would you think it would be worth?
Brenda L.
Winnipeg
Dear Brenda,
You have a fabulous old microphone. I personally have a large collection of old microphones. This is a Western Electric model 618A. It was a favourite of broadcasters in the 1930s. The top “CBC” call letters is called the flag.
The flag is cast separate from the microphone. The base you have is not original to the time period.
The call letters add significantly to the value. I would place a value of $500 to $600 as it stands.
