Victoria

Two-term New Democrat MP Murray Rankin is not running in this election, leaving the Victoria riding open for a slate made up largely of political newcomers. NDP candidate Laurel Collins was elected to Victoria city council last fall. The Greens placed second in Victoria in 2015 and view the riding as a ripe opportunity to take the constituency from the NDP. Racelle Kooy, a community outreach worker who is also a member of the Samahquam First Nation, is running for the Greens. Conservative candidate Richard Caron is a chef who has worked at several of Victoria’s top restaurants.

Population: 117,133 (Elections Canada)

Incumbent: Vacant.

Major communities: The city of Victoria, a small part of the district municipality of Saanich and all of Oak Bay.

Main challengers: The Greens see Victoria as a riding where they stand an excellent chance of winning, but face voters who traditionally vote NDP or Liberal. Collins is looking to replace Rankin, who is well-regarded locally and nationally. Nikki Macdonald is a longtime Liberal who worked for former prime minister Jean Chretien and is the daughter of former Liberal cabinet minister Donald Macdonald, who served with former prime minister Pierre Trudeau.

Election history: Former Liberal cabinet minister David Anderson was elected to four terms in Victoria from 1993 to 2006. In 1878, Sir John A. Macdonald was parachuted into the Victoria riding and won, promising to complete the Canadian Pacific Railway.

Fun fact: Tourism Victoria says the city’s Chinatown is the oldest in the country and Fan Tan Alley is the narrowest street in Canada. The city also has an annual flower count dating back to the 1970s and in 2018, the total blooms counted was over 3.4 billion.
