ARIES (March 21-April 19)

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

It will please you to work behind the scenes today. You need some time to catch your breath and ground yourself. Nevertheless, plans for travel in the future are percolating in your mind. Where is it you want to go when you are finally able to do so?

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

Today you will enjoy contacting others and they will be glad to hear from you as well. Because interactions with friends, groups and clubs will be a plus for you — use social media and online options. Someone might encourage you to be bolder with your goals.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

Somehow you want to explore more of your world. How to do this with travel restrictions? Be an arm chair traveller. You can also learn more through schooling and courses. Many of you will explore opportunities in the media, publishing, the law and medicine. Yes!

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

This is an excellent day to discuss how to divide or share something like an inheritance. Whatever happens, you will likely come out smelling like a rose. Keep your pockets open because you can benefit from the generosity of others.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

This is a lovely day to communicate with acquaintances as well as close friends and partners because you feel warm, expansive and charitable to others. Explore Facebook and social media. If you can help someone close to you — this will be gratifying for you as well.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

You will also enjoy working with people from other countries and different cultures today. Whatever you do today will benefit others as well as yourself. This is a good thing!

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

A playful day! Normally you would party and enjoy sports events, fun activities with kids, the arts, musical performances and social outings. However, you can still enjoy music, the arts and fun with kids. Romance with someone “different” might begin.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Who doesn’t love a good comeback story?

Todd Fanning, one of the most decorated golfers in Manitoba history, is attempting to author one heck of a compelling tale at his home course this week.

After falling a whopping 10 strokes off the lead at one point in the opening 18 holes of the Canadian Men’s Senior Championship, Fanning has roared back to life and heads into Friday’s fourth and final round at Niakwa Country Club with a puncher’s chance.

He followed up Tuesday’s six-over 78 — a performance he told the Free Press was “kind of embarrassing” — with rounds of 71 and 70 on Wednesday and Thursday. That has him at three-over for the event, five shots out of first place.

‘Huge resource gaps’: judge shortage leads to circuit court cuts

Dean Pritchard 4 minute read Wednesday, Sep. 9, 2026

A shortage of judges is forcing Manitoba’s provincial court to slash sittings across the province.

The court announced in a notice to the profession Wednesday that it will be reducing the number of annual court sittings at nine rural circuit locations and St. Boniface provincial court in Winnipeg by 68 sittings, effective April 1, 2027.

The reductions are necessary to balance “access to justice needs with the complement of judicial resources currently insufficient to maintain the current court schedule,” said the notice, signed by provincial court Chief Judge Ryan Rolston.

Affected circuit courts include Altona, Arborg, Beausejour, Easterville, Cranberry Portage, Lundar, Grand Rapids, Moose Lake, and Pine Falls.

U of M students call for ban on far-right group

Maggie Macintosh 4 minute read Yesterday at 6:00 AM CDT

Some University of Manitoba students are calling on their school to ban a far-right group from campus after posters promoting mass deportations were found during the summer break.

More than 50 people rallied on Wednesday, the first day of classes, to make known their concerns about a group called the Dominion Society of Canada.

The protest was organized after a supporter of the self-described nationalist group posted a video over the Labour Day weekend that shows him putting up flyers in Fort Garry.

“Canada is a really beautiful country and I have been welcomed here by a lot of beautiful people and it’s been amazing, but when I see harmful rhetoric online and now, on campus, it gives me a lot of anxiety,” said Ela Ancheta, an arts major at U of M.

Flash, bang … oops: police raid leads to lawsuit

Erik Pindera 4 minute read Wednesday, Sep. 9, 2026

A couple suing the city allege Winnipeg Police Service officers trying to execute a search warrant at their condominium complex rappelled down the side of the building, broke in their glass patio door and fired off a stun grenade before realizing they were in the wrong unit.

Saeid Ghavami and Shahla Shojaei, a married couple who are academics and scientific researchers at the University of Manitoba, filed the lawsuit in Court of King’s Bench last month over the Jan. 31, 2025 incident.

The claim names the City of Winnipeg and several officers involved in the operation, whose identities are, at this point, unknown to the couple, and are referred to as “John Does.”

Officers were attempting to execute the warrant on the third floor of the eight-storey Pembina Highway building, the court filing says. The couple lives on the fourth floor.
