Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 21/09/2023 (774 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.

Just in time for the start of advance voting this weekend, we’re providing an opportunity for you to get to know the people who want to represent you in Manitoba’s legislature.

Each registered candidate was invited to introduce themselves and explain their priorities for your community. We also asked them to identify the biggest challenge in the constituency, their political role model and to tell us something about themselves that voters might find surprising.

See what they had to say at wfp.to/candidates.

Some key takeways:

• Age-wise, candidates are about evenly split between baby boomers, Generation X and millennials. A handful of Gen Z-ers (under age 26) are taking a run at an MLA’s seat.

• Candidates have a wide variety of backgrounds, ranging from locomotive engineers to doctors to farmers. A lot of candidates are teachers, lawyers or entrepreneurs.

• About a quarter of candidates who responded live outside the constituency where they are running; those who don’t live there often said they have some prior connection — for example, they had previously been a resident or had family or a job there, or their home is no longer in the constituency as a result of boundary changes.

• As for our candidates’ political role models, Tommy Douglas, Winston Churchill and Barack Obama made many appearances, along with the candidates’ own parents and grandparents.

Before heading to the advance polls or to the ballot box on Oct. 3, please take a moment to check out this new feature.

And if you’re a candidate who hasn’t yet responded, there’s still time! Check your email for your invitation; if you can’t find it, email wendy.sawatzky@winnipegfreepress.com.
