Two people are facing charges for allegedly assaulting Winnipeg Transit employees in separate incidents within a 10-hour span Tuesday.
A 51-year-old man is accused of randomly throwing a beer can at a driver while exiting a bus at Dunkirk Avenue and Kingston Row at about 6 a.m.
The man bit the driver, who was trying to restrain him, police said. He was charged with assault and held in custody.
At about 3:40 p.m., a 31-year-old woman who refused to pay bus fare at Main Street and Pioneer Avenue punched a supervisor in the face, police said.
The supervisor, who was enforcing fares outside a stopped bus, held the woman until police arrived. The suspect, who faces a charge of assaulting a peace officer, was released on an appearance notice.
The incidents occurred less than two weeks after Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1505 renewed a call for new safety shields, which would fully enclose bus operators while they are in the driver’s seat, to be tested to determine if they should be rolled out across the city’s entire fleet.
It followed an attack in which the union said a female passenger reached around a safety shield and twice stabbed a driver in the leg with a syringe. The incident happened on Isabel Street near William Avenue at about 1 a.m. on Aug. 5.
The union said a driver was threatened with a syringe the previous day.
