TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

You need to keep track of your money because something unexpected could impact your wealth through damage, loss or theft. Parents should be extra-vigilant because this is an accident-prone day for your kids. Social plans will change.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

This is a challenging day! The moon is at the top of your chart; the sun is at the bottom of your chart; and they are both at odds with unpredictable Uranus in your sign. It’s the classic day for rebellion against authority. Your home routine might change. Equipment might break. Tread carefully!

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

Pay attention to everything you say and do, because this is an accident-prone day. Think before you speak as you might feel controlled by your impulses. This could get you in trouble. Be aware of everything you do. Keep things simple.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

This is a challenging day in terms of dealing with your money and possessions as well as friends and groups. It feels like everything is up for grabs — and in a way, it is. Fortunately, you will be diplomatic and skilful when speaking with others. By nature, you are quick to see the big picture, and this will help.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

The sun is in your sign at odds with Uranus and the moon. This is not easy. You might suddenly have an argument. Sudden upsets are classic. Equipment or cars might experience sudden breakdowns. Your daily routine will not be the same. Keep your eyes open to avoid accidents.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

This is a tough day but there are some blessings. For the most part, your work routine might be interrupted. Travel plans might suddenly change. It’s the kind of day where you take two steps forward and one step back. Fortunately, your ruler Venus is in your sign helping you cope.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Unexpected upsets with friends, groups and financial institutions might take place. People might quarrel about assets or money. Parents must be vigilant because this is an accident-prone day for kids. Nevertheless, travel appeals. Keep your eyes open.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

This is the classic day for a public argument or rebellion. Fortunately, the position of the sun makes you look good. Nevertheless, you could end up with egg on your face. (Ketchup helps.) Don’t throw your weight around. Be patient and tolerant with others.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Tread carefully because this is an accident-prone day. Whatever happens will be swift and come right out of the blue. Pay attention to everything you say and do, especially relating to your work. Travel will be interrupted or cancelled. Be alert.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

This day is full of all kinds of unexpected events and little rebellions, and this wild energy will likely impact your possessions, money and shared property. Social plans will suddenly change. Parents must be extra-vigilant about their kids to avoid accidents.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

The moon is in your sign at odds with the sun, Mercury and Uranus, which makes for an explosive, unpredictable energy. This is the classic day for little rebellions and accidents. Equipment and cars might break down. Family arguments might take place. Stay chill.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Film director David Fincher (1962) shares your birthday. You’re a determined, inventive nonconformist. You seek knowledge and ways to express your creativity. This is the beginning of a new cycle. Expect adventures and major changes. Be open for new opportunities. Prepare for leadership. What you do now will bring great benefit in the future.

Manitoba Hydro’s strategy: Deny, deny, deny

Tim Sale 5 minute read Friday, Aug. 28, 2026

Here’s a good story…

A man walks into your office and says, “Have I got a deal for you! I want $3 billion (plus perhaps a bit more) to build you something that you might use three or even four times a year, for maybe 30-60 hours each time. Sign here.”

You might respond… “and I’ve got a lovely bridge for sale…”

That is exactly what Manitoba Hydro wants — $3 billion or more, plus the fossil fuel bonus for peak load events that happen a few times each year. They assure us that the gas turbines will only be used very occasionally. At the same time, they tell us that we are headed for a crisis of energy supply by 2030.

Carney’s defence of Lake Ontario carries enormous weight

Niigaan Sinclair 5 minute read Friday, Aug. 28, 2026

For centuries on Turtle Island (North America), explorers, map makers, and political leaders have erased Indigenous place names and substituted them — more often than not — with political, ethnocentric, and self-aggrandizing names.

In recent years, a few places on the continent have had Indigenous names re-established, but as of today, few of the original names are “official.”

So, it was no surprise when U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday signed an executive order directing the U.S. Department of the Interior and Board on Geographic Names to take steps within 30 days to officially rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America.”

The move may have been a result of the Canada-U.S. trade war and Trump’s pettiness and ego, but it also fits in perfectly with his career.

Looking back on Bombers shocking, and convincing, win over CFL’s top team

Taylor Allen 7 minute read Yesterday at 4:52 PM CDT

It was getting harder and harder to believe in the 2026 edition of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

If anyone outside their locker room picked them to beat the Montreal Alouettes, they must’ve kept it to themselves, as pundits — this one included — and armchair quarterbacks across the nation doubted their chances heading into Friday night.

And honestly, rightfully so. The Bombers had left a lot to be desired through their opening 10 games.

But no matter what the stats say or what outsiders think, they play the games for a reason.

Summer Reading Challenge concludes with more musings from young readers

8 minute read Yesterday at 6:00 AM CDT

Another Free Press Summer Reading Challenge for Kids is in the books, but before we turn the page completely, there are a few more reviews written by our young readers to share.

Participating readers were tasked to write down their thoughts about any of the books on the Summer Reading Challenge’s three reading lists; with a range of formats (novels, graphic novels, books with pictures), themes and reading levels to choose from, budding reviewers of all ages were eager to share their opinion.

Those registered for the challenge received reading resources and activities throughout the summer, from word searches or puzzles based on the content of the books to a set of discussion questions and, in one instance, a special video from an author.

There were also more creative activities meant to engage readers’ critical thinking skills, all of which were free to access for anyone who signed up for the challenge.
