ARIES (March 21-April 19)

Stay light on your feet, because this is a fast-changing day. Be ready for anything. New faces and new places might intrigue you. As the day wears on, you can enjoy socializing with others as well as checking out sporting events and playful activities with kids. Romance is blessed!

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

This is a restless day for you. Those of you at work will enjoy the support of helpful co-workers. Sporting events, fun socializing and playful times with children will please you. (You will be unusually forthright and direct in your communications.)

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

A friend might surprise you. Alternatively, you might meet a real character? Later in the day, your involvement with a group will bring you joy. You might also learn something new or have an experience that expands your world. Great day for socializing and romance.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

You’re high-viz! Meanwhile, relations with bosses, parents, authority figures and the police might hold a surprise for you. Be aware of this and don’t push your luck. However, as this day wears on, you might see ways to boost your income or purchase something special.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

Surprising opportunities to travel might fall into your lap. (This is an upbeat, friendly day.) Enjoy talking to others, especially people from different backgrounds. Seek out opportunities that expand your world and teach you something new and exciting.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Discussions about how to share something or perhaps how to divide an inheritance will go well. Initially, something or someone might surprise you or catch you off-guard. (Be ready for this.) But later you’ll have a warm feeling in your tummy about everything.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

A partner, spouse or close friend might surprise you. Or you might meet someone new and unusual — perhaps someone in the general public? Later, your involvement with a group of people (or perhaps a friend) will be rewarding.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Your work routine will be interrupted by something unexpected. Could be good or not so good. Take care to avoid accidents and equipment breakdowns. Later in the day, bosses and people in authority will favour you. Work-related travel is likely.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

This is a marvellous day to get out and socialize. Enjoy vacation times, sporting events, fun activities with kids and romantic outings. Because it’s easy for you to feel friendly toward others, the world will feel friendly to you. What goes around, comes around.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Despite your desire for adventure, you might want to relax at home and enjoy time in familiar surroundings. Nevertheless, your home routine might be interrupted by something. Small appliances might break down or a minor outage could occur. Someone surprising might knock at the door.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Pay attention to everything you say and do because this is a mildly accident-prone day for you. However, you will enjoy meeting new faces and encountering unusual people. Later in the day, you’ll enjoy good times with partners, spouses and close friends. The world is your oyster!

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

Keep an eye on your money and your possessions, because something unexpected could impact them, especially earlier in the day. Sporting events and social outings will appeal. Money and favours from others might come to you. Later in the day, you might discover some moneymaking ideas or encounter someone who has excellent advice for you.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actor Cameron Diaz (1972) shares your birthday. You are perceptive, ambitious and curious. You’re also an organizer with excellent analytical skills. This year your creativity and zest for life are at a pinnacle! Enjoy socializing. Nurture the happiness and beauty you have within. Let your guard down and loosen up a bit.

A trade and tariff take

My take on the Canada/U.S. trade negotiation breakdown is that the Americans simply overplayed their hand. They added last-minute items and wording in an effort to jam us into a one-sided deal, expecting we would avert new tariffs at any price.

Now we see the U.S. Trade Representative, (Jamieson) Greer, pleading it was Canada that came forth with new requests. It is hard to believe, given (the Trump administration’s) propensity to stretch the truth and outright lie.

Trump needs a win on a trade deal with Canada more than we do, given U.S. mid-term elections are coming up in a couple of months. Inflation in the U.S. is already higher due to increased oil prices from Trump’s war on Iran and his tariffs create additional upward price pressures.

Google Maps to display Lake Ontario as Lake America in U.S.

Kyle Duggan, The Canadian Press 4 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 6:49 PM CDT

OTTAWA - Google Maps has updated to display "Lake America" for users located in the United States, after President Donald Trump signed an executive order this week to rename the Great Lake.

Users in Canada will still see it displayed as Lake Ontario on Google Maps, though the search engine will pull up Lake America as a result if users enter that name in their query.

The search giant said in an Aug. 29 post on its corporate website it made the change because the U.S. government's geographic names database has formally renamed the lake.

Users outside Canada and the U.S. will see both names, Google's post said.

Every city council ward is set to have a contested race in the Oct. 28 municipal election, barring any withdrawals, after additional candidates registered for two contests.

Dennis Bayomi is running in Charleswood-Tuxedo-Westwood, where Evan Duncan is the incumbent candidate.

Bayomi is president and co-deputy leader of the Green Party of Manitoba. He’s run for the Greens in provincial and federal elections.

Hydro announces CEO out after two years

Chris Kitching 6 minute read Friday, Aug. 28, 2026

Allan Danroth is out as Manitoba Hydro’s president and CEO — a departure that came as a surprise to some observers — just two years after he was hired.

Danroth left for personal reasons, the Crown corporation’s board chair, Jamie Wilson, said Friday, while announcing chief operating officer Hal Turner as interim president and CEO ahead of a national and international search for a replacement.

“Today’s one of those days where you have a lot of mixed emotions,” Turner told reporters at Hydro’s downtown Winnipeg headquarters. “I just want to say on behalf of all the employees in Manitoba Hydro, we very much appreciate Allan’s leadership over the last two years.”

Turner wouldn’t say whether he will apply to be the next permanent CEO.

‘Fine wine’: Vintage Collaros shows up in big win over Als after 38th birthday

Ken Wiebe 6 minute read Yesterday at 10:29 AM CDT

Zach Collaros was in no mood for I-told-you-so’s.

There were no references – either thinly veiled or direct – to the naysayers, many of whom thought the Blue Bombers were in deep trouble as the league-leading Montreal Alouettes rolled into town on a roll for a matchup on Friday that could have left Winnipeg with a sub-.500 record heading into the Labour Day Classic.

No, that’s not Collaros’ style or part of how he operates.

After outduelling Alouettes quarterback Davis Alexander in a convincing 44-28 victory, Collaros stood in front of a group of reporters and displayed almost no emotion, despite delivering what can easily be described as his best showing of the season.

Council candidates call out vandalism after campaign signs defaced in Waverley West

Scott Billeck 4 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 11:34 AM CDT

A council candidate in Waverley West said she will not be intimidated after 16 of her campaign signs were vandalized this week — some with apparent gang symbols.

Nafiya Naso is the second candidate in the ward whose signs were defaced this month. Jasmine Brar, who is also running for the council seat, had some of her signs broken on Friday along Kenaston Boulevard and signs near Naso’s that were also defaced on Saturday.

Earlier this month, Eaglewood Park in the nearby Prairie Pointe neighbourhood was also vandalized with graffiti that included homophobic slurs, anti-India messages and repeated references to “3LK” — a symbol Naso believes is associated with a gang.

Naso’s signs, located along Waverley Street near Tim Sale Drive and across from École South Pointe School in southwest Winnipeg, were spray-painted with apparent gang signs, crude drawings and other messages, including “loser” and “Ur not winning” written across her name and photograph.
