THERE are no secrets where Michael Bishop is concerned — he’s high risk and comes with potential big gains and potential big losses. Sunday’s version of Bishop was the latter.

The veteran quarterback, who had led the Blue Bombers to three straight wins prior to his team falling 24-21 to the B.C. Lions, failed to take advantage of excellent field position in the first quarter and made four glaring mistakes in a sub-par performance.

Bishop finished the afternoon with a 13-for-32 ledger with one fumble, three interceptions and one touchdown. During a stretch in the first quarter the Bombers defence stole the ball from the Lions three times, but all Bishop and his offence could come up with were a pair of field goals and a single off a missed field goal.

Not good enough.

“We’re upset because we know we let this get away,” said Bishop. “They did a good job of getting pressure on us. When we got down there (near the B.C. goal-line) they brought pressure and their secondary did a good job. The defence got the ball for us and we go out there and attempt field goals. We need to go out there and get touchdowns.”

Turnovers will eat a team up and the Bombers had their worst stretch of this season when they gave up 14 in back-to-back losses to the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

“If you have turnovers and you don’t score, you don’t win,” said Bishop. “I’m not going to harp on it, I know this locker-room isn’t going to harp on it. We’ve got Montreal coming in and we have to get ready for them.”

Bombers coach Mike Kelly wouldn’t dump the loss at Bishop’s feet, but came short of excusing his quarterback for his mistakes.

“The one that gave them the winning touchdown down the middle of the field, we had a receiver that ran the wrong route. That was not on Mike. The one that gave them their first touchdown of the game… that ball should have been handed off, it wasn’t even a pass play. Those things happen,” said Kelly. “We’ve got aggressive guys that are trying to make plays and trying to get something done and when you’re out there trying as hard as our guys do, sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn’t.”
