DAWSON CREEK, B.C. — Kevin Martin was unbeatable in winning the gold medal at the Vancouver Olympics and he carried that momentum into the season-ending Grey Power Players’ Championship at Encana Events Centre.
Martin won his record 15th career Capital One Grand Slam of Curling event Sunday, defeating Brad Gushue 8-7 in an extra end, completing a 6-0 run and ending the year on a 32-game winning streak — including an 11-0 run at the Vancouver Games.
“It’s huge,” Martin told CBC of finishing the year on a winning note. “You can even feel the pressure amongst the guys in this game. We didn’t want to come this far and drop that last one. What a game. It was a good one.”
Martin had the hammer in the extra end and was able to keep the middle of the sheet open, leaving him with a hit and stick on a Gushue stone in the four-foot for the victory and his sixth career Players’ Championship title, his first since 2007.
The Edmonton rink capped a successful season that also included an Olympic gold medal and another Grand Slam win at the BDO Classic Canadian Open with the $25,000 first-place prize and an additional $50,000 for winning the Capital One Cup. The Martin foursome, also including John Morris, Marc Kennedy and Ben Hebert, earned more than $200,000 this year on the Asham World Curling Tour and in Olympic prize money.
“The work ethic these guys put in, I’ve never seen anything like that,” Martin said. “You have a bunch of good guys that work that hard… good things happen.”
Gushue was confident heading into the game, having already defeated Martin three times this season, but Martin had won the most recent match between the two teams.
Gushue outcurled Martin, shooting 84 per cent Sunday while Martin shot 79 per cent. But missed double-takeout attempts in the third and fifth ends by Gushue led to deuces for Martin.
After falling behind 5-3 after five, Gushue stormed back into the lead with a three-spot in the sixth. Martin came right back with another deuce in the seventh
Calgary’s Cheryl Bernard won the women’s Players’ Championship Saturday, beating crosstown rival Crystal Webster 6-4. Bernard, the Olympic silver medallist, also won the women’s Capital One Cup.
