Steven Jyles might have been starting in relief, but his start must have come as a relief to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

The 27-year-old Jyles, making his first ever start for the Bombers, led the home team to a 47-21 spanking of the Edmonton Eskimos before 26,041 sun-baked fans at Canad Inns Stadium on Saturday.

The Bombers, now 2-2, jumped out to a commanding 23-0 lead in the first half over the winless Eskimos, now 0-4, and – despite a few nervous moments when the Eskimos narrowed the score to 23-14 in the third quarter –cruised to victory.

Jyles not only completed 14-of-22 passes for 267 yards, but the pivot rushed for another 63 yards on eight carries, including two touchdowns.

If anything, Jyles was cool and confident in the pocket, displaying the mobility that was every bit as effective for Pierce, who suffered a sprained knee in a loss last week to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Perhaps Jyles most impressive moment came in the second quarter, when the quarterback sprinted towards the sidelines before pulling up to hit  receiver Terence Jeffers-Harris for a 10-yard hook-up that the fleet-footed rookie turned into a 46-yard TD reception.

The Bombers did provide Jyles with an early cushion when Winnipeg defensive lineman Moton Hopkins intercepted Eskimos quarterback Ricky Ray early in the first quarter and rumbled 36 yards into the Edmonton end zone. After the Esks surrendered a safety moments later, Bombers runningback Fred Reid increased the lead to 16-0 with a four yard scamper.

Jyles two rushing touchdowns came from one and two yards out.

Winnipeg place-kicker Alexis Serna added a 45-yard field goal to round out the Bombers scoring.
