ARIES (March 21-April 19)

Continue to focus on home and family issues, especially repairs and improvements. This is a lovely day to socialize and enjoy fun activities with kids; however, disputes about shared property, taxes, debt or inheritances could create power struggles. Tread carefully.

Argentine soccer star Lionel Messi is 39 today.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

This is a busy time for you with short trips, appointments and conversations with everyone. You might be redecorating at home and entertaining. You have lots of energy because fiery Mars is still in your sign boosting your vim and vigour. Be patient with partners and authority figures. Stay chill.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

It’s fortunate fair Venus is in your house of communications smoothing difficult conversations you might encounter. This is because power struggles related to your job, pet or health are hard to avoid. Guard against being obsessive.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

You are a nurturing sign and you might feel compelled to have your way with issues related to your kids, social outings and the arts. This could put you at odds with someone, especially over funding or the cost of something. Make sure to listen to what others have to say.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

The day has its challenges because the moon and Pluto are at odds with your sign. This could create sudden urges and impulsive behaviour at home, within the family, or with a spouse or partner. Something might upset you to the point you lose focus on everything else. Deep breaths.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

This is a popular time for you, and you might be interacting with younger people more than usual. Travel and educational plans, along with medical and legal issues, might also be on the table. For your own good, avoid emotional power struggles. Don’t let people manipulate you.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

You like harmony in your surroundings. Furthermore, you are noticed now because the sun is high in your chart, making you look good, which is fortunate. These are good reasons to avoid public money squabbles with your kids or a romantic partner.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

The moon is in your sign at odds with your ruler Pluto making you emotionally intense, perhaps even obsessive about something. You are a strong-willed sign and when you want something, you can come off as threatening or overpowering. Turn down the volume.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Something going on behind the scenes is filling your thoughts. It’s all you can think about. To break free from this obsessive grip, focus on work and being productive. You might also travel for pleasure — something that always pleases you.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Be easygoing and co-operative when talking to friends and members of groups and organizations because personality clashes will easily arise. Why not channel this playful, competitive energy into something enjoyable? Let go of what is creating your angst.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Increased chaos and activity at home might be frustrating now. Fortunately, you’re prepared to work. This day however, power struggles with authority figures — parents, bosses, teachers, VIPs and police — might arise. Never underestimate the power of courtesy.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

Focus on playful opportunities to socialize with others and enjoy sports, the arts and fun times with children. Work colleagues will also be pleasant and supportive. Therefore, don’t get bogged down in politics, religion or racial issues, which might upset you. Not right now. You need a clear mind to address these matters.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Argentine footballer Lionel Messi (1987) shares your birthday. You are determined, realistic and energetic. You’re also affectionate and committed to those who are dear to you. This is a year of work and construction. Simplicity is key. Build solid foundations both internally and externally. Take charge of your health. Physical exercise will play an important role.

Students continue to criticize handling of MITT’s closure

Morgan Modjeski 5 minute read 6:00 AM CDT

Students at a Manitoba trade college say their education has been hampered as a result of its impending closure and they blame government for a poor transition.

The provincial government announced in January it would close the Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology because it was no longer financially viable following the federal government’s decision to cut the number of international students allowed to study in Canada.

Officials have said students would remain the top priority as 19 programs from MITT are set to be absorbed by Red River College Polytech.

Kieran Smith, an electrical applications student at MITT, said it feels like those in charge “don’t really care.”

Winnipegger Bairos-Novak medals at wheel gymnastics worlds

Grace Penner 8 minute read 5:00 PM CDT

Steven Bairos-Novak has always had a knack for participating in the more unconventional side of sports. He has since added wheel gymnastics to that list.

The Winnipegger has always been an athlete but not consistently in the same sport. In high school, he was deemed too short to play basketball and while that was one dream crushed at a young age, he pivoted to start something new.

“My dad wanted me to do a sport and he knew another parent of a pole vaulter, so he got me started. I fell in love with pole vault,” Bairos-Novak said.

Starting in Grade 10, he trained at Winnipeg Optimist Athletics, learning the world of track and field. Coincidentally, recent athlete-builder inductee of the Sports Manitoba Hall of Fame — Wayne McMahon — was one of his coaches, alongside Scot Dressler.

Landlord asks city to work with him over homeless camp after appeal option turfed

Scott Billeck 4 minute read 5:44 PM CDT

A West Broadway landlord says the City of Winnipeg has rejected his attempt to appeal an order that requires him to clear a homeless encampment from his riverfront property.

Marvin Sharp, CEO of Astroid Management Ltd., which operates the Pen-Eve Apartments at 35 Balmoral St., said Monday the decision is absurd since his firm was given almost no time to respond to the order.

The city denied his request for an appeal hearing because he failed to respond before the July 18 compliance deadline.

Sharp contends that was impossible because the compliance order, dated July 10, did not arrive at his office until July 17, leaving him just one day to file an appeal. The city clerk’s office is closed on weekends.

Vacant Bay store on road to redevelopment, St. Vital Centre owner says

Gabrielle Piche 6 minute read Friday, Jul. 24, 2026

Entertainment attractions are coming to fill the former Hudson’s Bay space in St. Vital Centre.

Montreal-based real estate firm Leyad, the south Winnipeg mall’s owner, says it is finalizing an agreement for the vacant property. Further details should appear in the next couple months, said president Henry Zavriyev.

“We’re looking at what other types of experiences we can bring to the mall that aren’t just typical retail,” he said during a visit to Winnipeg this week.

“We want to create an experience where you can just come to the mall, hang out here for hours, no matter if you’re a kid, an adult, a retiree.”

‘Eight credible threats’ against Hydro employees: CEO

Chris Kitching 6 minute read Updated: 4:32 PM CDT

Manitoba Hydro president and CEO Allan Danroth took aim at critics and revealed he and staff members have been threatened while defending the Crown corporation’s plan for three new combustion turbines Monday.

Without identifying individuals, Danroth said “constant, uninformed criticism” of Hydro and misinformation has eroded public trust and contributed to hostilities and an unsafe workplace for employees.

“Manitoba Hydro is currently managing eight credible threats against our employees, five of them directed at me personally,” Danroth told a Public Utilities Board hearing in Winnipeg.

“More troubling is these threats are increasingly affecting our front-line workforce. In the last year, my employees have been threatened with weapons, including guns, while performing their duties, and in one recent incident a homeowner directed his dogs to attack one of our meter readers.”
