TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

Be aware of the limitations of the moon alert and agree to nothing important. Good news: Mercury stops being retrograde, which will reduce the transportation delays, car problems and mixed-up communications you’ve been dealing with for a while.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

With fiery Mars in your sign now, you have lots of energy and drive. However, be aware of the limitations the moon alert. (See above.) You’ll be happy to know Mercury ceases being retrograde, which will improve your finances, especially in terms of delays and mistakes.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

Excellent news. Mercury has been retrograding in your sign since June 29. Now this is over, which means your life will regain a greater degree of normalcy and silly mistakes will be reduced along with delays and transportation problems. Thank goodness.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

Be aware of the moon alert. Fortunately, you are in a strong position because both the sun and lucky Jupiter are in your sign. Fiery Mars is also well-placed, promoting teamwork, competitive sports and athletics. Starting now, life takes on forward momentum.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

With Venus in your sign, you’re enjoying socializing with others. Nevertheless, you also have a strong tendency now to work alone or behind the scenes. You’re also ambitious to achieve. With this in mind, be aware there’s a moon alert. Volunteer for nothing.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

For the last month, Mercury has been retrograding at the top of your chart affecting your relations with bosses, parents and authority figures from the past. As of now, this is over. Although you might be focused on financial matters, restrict spending to food and gas.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

The moon is in your sign, which gives you a slight advantage over the other signs. However, most of this day is a moon alert. (See above.) Therefore, tread carefully and restrict your spending to food and gas. Don’t volunteer for anything. Postpone important decisions.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

It’s encouraging that Mercury retrograde is over because it might have delayed financial matters for you, especially dealing with third parties, partners or the government. Go forward with confidence now to make plans for travel or endeavours related to publishing, medicine, the law or higher education.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

In the last month, Mercury has been retrograding opposite your sign, attracting ex-partners and old friends back into your world. (This might have been a mixed blessing for some.) At any rate, as of now, Mercury retrograde is finished. However — check moon alert above.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

You’ll be relieved to know Mercury retrograde stops because it has been creating equipment problems, delays and confusion with respect to your job, health and even perhaps regarding your pet. This means your efforts to work will be more efficient and reliable. Yay.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

You might feel restless for adventure or a change. You’re working hard but you also want to explore something new. Fortunately, Mercury ceases being retrograde. Nevertheless, most of this day is a moon alert so just bide your time. It’s all systems go tomorrow.

Man, 21, killed in animal attack on Manitoba First Nation

Chris Kitching 5 minute read Monday, Sep. 14, 2026

The family of “a kind and gentle giant” is grief-stricken as officials try to determine what kind of animal killed the 21-year-old man in western Manitoba.

Moses Campeau was walking on a road to a friend’s house in Sapotaweyak Cree Nation, about 600 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg, when he was fatally injured Sept. 9, his mother, Paula Campeau, said Monday.

“Moses was a kind and gentle giant,” she said. “He was a person who (people) would ask to come and help them, and he would go without even hesitating.”

Manitoba RCMP said officers from the Swan River detachment responded to a report of a suspicious death at about 3:10 a.m. The scene was held and the RCMP’s major crime services took over the investigation.

Winnipeg is one of nearly 40 municipalities to receive a failing grade from the Canadian Federation of Independent Business in the organization’s inaugural “municipal report card.”

The Manitoba capital ranked 33rd amongst the 66 municipalities assessed, earning an F, with an overall score of 4.84 out of 10.

The report, which the CFIB released on Tuesday, evaluated cost burden, regulatory burden and small-business friendliness using 11 indicators and data collected up to Dec. 31, 2025.

Winnipeg’s grade is a starting point and not the final word, said Brianna Solberg, CFIB’s director for the Prairies and northern Canada.

Powerful personal drama provides both bark and bite

Ben Waldman 4 minute read 4:22 PM CDT

Well before playwright Rafaella Marcus’ words have the chance to entangle us in the stickiness of Sap, the performance space initiates the task in director Elio Zarrillo’s staging of this discomfiting and affecting story of restraint and liberation.

Shortly after the audience takes its seats in four segments surrounding a central channel — a shimmering tunnel containing cellist Grace Morningstar — it becomes clear as actors Hera Nalam and Liz Whitbread make their way around the tight corners of David Oro and Hazel Venzon’s set that certain actions will go unseen unless viewers keeps their heads on a swivel: in a production meant to uproot understanding, a fixed perspective will never do.

In this vulnerable and powerful production from Theatre by the River (105 minutes) the actors meet the excellence of Marcus’s twisty script, which calls for emotionally draining and jolting depictions of a relationship headed down a rocky road.

Nalam plays a young communications pro for a women’s aid charity whose dating life is a work in progress. She’s bright and optimistic, taking notice of elements of nature that nobody else seems to recognize. On her daily commute, she looks out from the bus window in awe of a home overflowing with branches and leaves.

Winnipeg, police and downtown crime

Editorial 4 minute read 2:01 AM CDT

A safer downtown is not much use if people are still afraid to walk there.

That is the uncomfortable message from Winnipeg’s latest police citizen survey, and one city council should take seriously.

Downtown crime has fallen this year, according to the most recent police statistics. Violent crime is down even more. But for most Winnipeggers, the downtown still feels like a place to avoid, particularly after dark.

Only 44 per cent of survey respondents said they feel very or reasonably safe walking alone downtown during the day. At night, that number plunges to just eight per cent. Among women, it is an appalling three per cent, compared with 14 per cent of men.
