For 40 years, Mentoring Artists for Women’s Art has been supporting visual artists and art in Winnipeg, work it has been able to continue to do despite losing its former home on Main Street to a fire in December.

So, this year’s Over the Top art auction and cupcake party will double as both a milestone birthday celebration and a housewarming: MAWA has moved into its new digs at 329 Cumberland Ave. and is ready to auction off more than 150 original artworks donated by Aganetha Dyck, Ewa Tarsia, Bonnie Marin, Diana Thorneycroft, Sarah Anne Johnson and many more.

Local bakers have donated their own edible works of art in the form of all-you-can-eat cupcakes.

This annual fundraiser typically raises over $30,000 for MAWA, a not-for-profit, registered charity that offers high-quality visual art education, particularly for women and gender-diverse people. For more information and for tickets to Sunday’s cupcake party, visit mawa.ca.

From landscapers and renovators to backyard patio and home-improvement specialists, the four-day event promises to spark design ideas and inspiration.

There is also a chance to hear various experts speaking onstage, including celebrity contractor Bryan Baeumler of HGTV Canada’s Island of Bryan and professional organizer and declutterer Megan Golightly.

“I’ll be sharing some fun stories from behind the scenes of my shows, talking about the current real estate market and what decisions you can make on spending around your home to build the most amount of value into your home. I’ll also be doing a Q&A, and I always look forward to getting to meet lots of the local companies and people at the show,” Baeumler says.

There is also a craft and makers market showcasing jewelry, ceramics, clothing and paper goods from some of the city’s independent creators. On Saturday in the Subaru Lounge, Winnipeg singer-songwriter Sam Gardener will be performing from 5 to 9 p.m.

Never mind the bollocks, it’s the Punk Rock Flea Market

  • Victoria Inn Hotel and Convention Centre, 1808 Wellington Ave.
  • Sunday, 10:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Free

Lace up your Doc Martens, get your mohawk nice and pointy and slide into your toughest-looking leather jacket — the Winnipeg Punk Rock Flea Market returns Sunday for its big spring sale.

Over 70 vendors plus live DJs will take to the Victoria Inn Hotel and Convention Centre for a day full of buying and selling handmade items, vintage clothes, books, delicious treats, records (punk and otherwise) and much, much more.

Among the vendors this time around are Treadwell Clothing, Wallflower Botanicals, jewelry by the Strange Geranium, Revel Records and Merch, Anishinaa-Bakes, Filthy Little Thing Soap Co., anime goods by Jonaleepuff, Thrift Nihilist, author illustrator GMB Chomichuk and many, many more.

And no, you don’t actually have to dress like a punk — but what’s the harm in trying?

For a complete list of vendors, see wfp.to/yYv. Organizers are also encouraging attendees to bring donations for Sunshine House — see a list of what they’re after at the same link.

Homme bringing intense life moments to the stage

Queens of the Stone Age

  • Canada Life Centre
  • Friday, 7:30 p.m.
  • Tickets: $47.75.-$95.50 at Ticketmaster

Queens of the Stone Age will turn back the clock to a time when the hard-rock group cranked up the volume.

The back-to-the-basics approach on QOTSA’s 2023 album In Times New Roman is attributed to the raw emotions sparked by tumultuous recent events surrounding frontman Josh Homme.

He has recently grieved for many friends in the music business — Taylor Hawkins, the Foo Fighters’ drummer who died in 2022, is among them — witnessed the turbulent end to his marriage and the uncertain feelings sparked by a cancer diagnosis and resulting surgery in 2023.

In a March interview on the CBC show Q with Tom Power, Homme mentions the danger of getting wrapped up too much in the intensity when he performs new songs such as Paper Machete and Emotion Sickness live in concert.

“These songs are about emotions and experiences you have and if you’re not careful, you accidentally get trapped in the gravity of those moments again,” Homme said during the interview.

British rock band the Struts will open.
