TORONTO – The Backstreet Boys apparently refuse to quit playing games with our calendars.

The architects of late ‘90s teen-pop just tacked on another show at Rogers Centre, extending their blockbuster 2027 residency at the Toronto stadium to a staggering 12 shows.

The boy band announced on social media today that they are adding “one more show” to the run on Sunday, March 7.

Dubbed “Into the Millennium – Homecoming: Live in Canada,” the residency was originally announced as a four-night night run, kicking off Feb.12, before the group added more shows last week, citing “overwhelming demand.”

The 12-show run eclipses Taylor Swift’s historic six-night stand at the Rogers Centre in November 2024, when fans from around the world swarmed Toronto for the Eras Tour.

In a post on X, the Backstreet Boys expressed surprise at the demand for their shows: “We never thought you guys would be this excited,” they wrote.

The residency will be the band’s only North American stadium shows of 2027.

Canada was actually the launch pad for the Backstreet Boys in North America. Their 1995 track “We’ve Got It Goin’ On” became a massive hit there well before they hit it big in the U.S.

Their music seemingly strikes a nostalgic chord with Canadian millennials — including Drake, who joined the band onstage during their last Toronto show in 2022 to sing their 1999 hit “I Want It That Way.”

Creatures’ comfort key to coping with loss

Maureen Scurfield 4 minute read Yesterday at 2:00 AM CDT

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: Not long ago I lost my husband to illness at far too young an age. My spouse was a great guy, but I do want another one.

I just want to pass on a little tip. When my husband was dying, he encouraged me to bring home warm and loving pets to our acreage just outside the city. They were my saviours when my husband was ill.

Since he has died, they continue to help me keep warm, happy and affectionate. They were my greatest comfort in the later stages when my man was in too much pain to hold me or be held. The cats and the dog would welcome me home from the hospital and transfer their cuddling to me, giving me all the attention I needed, and I always felt so loved.

I have been dating a fair bit for a fairly recent widow because I’m ready to be held and loved, and I feel my husband and the pets saying, “Way to go.”

Manitoba e-scooter legislation changes set to impose speed limit, age restrictions, sidewalk ban

Matthew Frank 5 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 11:26 AM CDT

People riding e-scooters and other personal electric vehicles in Manitoba will have to strap on a helmet, stay off sidewalks and follow new age limits once new provincial rules for the devices take effect next year.

The vehicles, which also include electric skateboards, hoverboards and unicycles, will fall under The Highway Traffic Act starting in 2027, according to the province’s website. E-bikes are excluded from the new rules, according to the province’s frequently-asked-questions page.

All riders must be at least 16 years old and wear properly fitting helmets — that goes for passengers, too, the province said.

The proposed new legislation sets a speed limit of 25 km/h and would prohibit personal electric vehicles from sidewalks unless signs specifically allow sidewalk use. Riders would be using shared paths or roads with speed limits of 50 km/hr or less. They won’t be allowed to operate the vehicles under the influence of alcohol or drugs and they must use hand signals and obey traffic signs.

Gang member who shot rival, bystander back in prison after release revoked

Erik Pindera 4 minute read Monday, Oct. 12, 2026

A Winnipeg man who shot a rival teenage gangster and an innocent 11-year-old bystander at the crowded Red River Exhibition more than four years ago has been sent back to prison.

Mocree Chuck Scatch-Dubour, now in his early 20s, left prison in April on statutory release on his 5 1/2-year federal sentence for the 2022 shooting. Scatch-Dubour was sentenced to the prison term as an adult in the spring of 2023 after pleading guilty to discharge of a firearm with intent to wound, aggravated assault and possession of a restricted firearm.

By law, most federal inmates automatically receive statutory release after two-thirds of their sentence, if they have not already been paroled.

Parole Board of Canada officials formally revoked Scatch-Dubour’s release this month after he unlawfully left his halfway house in June.

It’s a chilly Thanksgiving Monday morning on the eastern edge of Alberta. A sharp wind nips at exposed skin and drab grey clouds hang low in the sky. Such weather does not encourage high spirits, but Unity Bus volunteers can’t afford to let theirs falter: in just one week, on Oct. 19, Albertans will vote on a historic question on whether to remain in Canada.
