MANITOBA Opera is inviting the public to see the area behind the arias at the Centennial Concert Hall.

Free guided backstage tours will be offered on Sunday, April 22, as part of the company’s biennial Open House. It’s a day between performances of Donizetti’s comedy The Daughter of the Regiment, running April 21, 24 and 27.

The hour-long tours will take visitors to the orchestra pit, onstage and into the wings. They will stop at stations to look at hair and makeup, costumes, props, staging and the rehearsal process. The tours run every 20 minutes beginning at noon, with the last tour starting at 4 p.m.

Tour times must be booked in advance. To make a reservation, call Braden Alexander, 942-7470, or email balexander@manitobaopera.mb.ca

Comedienne Mary Walsh of This Hour Has 22 Minutes is making her opera debut in the non-singing role of a pushy duchess in The Daughter of the Regiment.

The opera stars former Winnipegger Nikki Einfeld as Marie, a spunky tomboy adopted and raised by a regiment of soldiers. Tickets are on sale at 944-8824 or www.manitobaopera.mb.ca

Mayoral candidates focus on public safety at Indigenous forum

Morgan Modjeski 4 minute read Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2026

Mayoral hopefuls made their pitch to Winnipeg’s Indigenous community Tuesday at a forum hosted by chiefs organizations.

“Public safety must include trust between police and First Nations,” said candidate Kevin Klein, a former chair of the police board. “Winnipeg needs a policing approach that protects Indigenous residents, supports victims, prevents crime and builds lasting relationships with Indigenous communities.”

The former city councillor and Tory cabinet minister promised harsher penalties for drug dealers and said he’d work to create a community safety task force that would include Indigenous leadership.

He also said the police service must recruit more Indigenous officers to change its culture.

Play asks the cutting questions

An IKEA nursery awaiting its tenant is the first stage into which visitors are allowed entry in playwright Jordi Mand’s The Cut.

We see an antique rocker and unmarked boxes strewn about, with a table lamp — an unofficial Ner tamid, eternal candle — sitting on the unblemished carpet in the centre of the room. Sarah (Hallie Seline) and Andrew (Wade Bogert O’Brien) have a lot to unpack as they settle into their own home: two shelves of biography waiting for a third.

The box of books from Sarah’s parents is opened early.

“Something From Nothing? Goodnight Bubbala?” Andrew laughs, turning the volumes cover-out on the wall of his future son’s room. “What are they building? A Jewish bookshelf?”

Creating safe sports environments

We do not do enough in youth sports to create a safe environment for all youth to participate safely and fully. Access to sports is a huge part of personal development for youth, including core teamwork and interpersonal skills, discipline and responsibility and passion.

Barriers should be removed for children and youth to be able to participate — especially girls and racialized youth. Despite being one of the strongest ways to connect as a community, sports hold a lot of privilege in who can access them and who will remain able to participate.

All youth deserve to feel a sense of belonging, have access to spaces for physical activity and to experience recreation free from harassment or discrimination from players, coaches or spectators.

Jets out of tune against Blues

Ken Wiebe 6 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 8:29 AM CDT

ST. LOUIS – The issue is no longer limited to secondary scoring for the Winnipeg Jets.

Although they continue to be far too reliant on the top line for production, the Jets have suddenly been limited to not enough goals in a more general sense.

The latest example was a 2-1 loss Tuesday to the St. Louis Blues at Enterprise Center.

The Jets battled hard in this Central Division duel, but they’ve scored 24 goals in nine games (2.67 goals per game) and have one victory during the past five games after a 3-0-1 start. One of those losses did come in overtime (1-3-1).

Limited visibility, radio communication among safety issues cited in mid-air collision

Chris Kitching 5 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 5:47 PM CDT

An investigative report into a mid-air plane crash that killed two student pilots in southeastern Manitoba cited concerns about radio communication, situational awareness and visual detection methods.

Two small planes collided twice and crashed into a field after one aircraft ended up flying above the other while both approached a runway at Steinbach South Airport the morning of July 8, 2025, a Transportation Safety Board report said Wednesday. The planes belonged to the Harv’s Air Service flight school.

“Once they’re on final (approach), the ability to see each other would have been very limited,” said Eric Vermette, a TSB regional manager in Winnipeg.
