Transportation Safety Board investigating after two pilots found dead near Regina

REGINA - A Manitoba-based flying school and air taxi provider says two of its pilots were found dead near Regina on Friday.

Adam Penner, president of Harv's Air, says in a statement that two people were aboard the Cessna 172 on a night flight from Regina to Steinbach, Man.

Penner says a search began after the aircraft did not arrive on schedule, and the plane was found along with its two occupants on Friday evening near Kisbey, southeast of Regina.

Harv's Air says it is shocked and saddened by the tragedy, and it is working with the Transportation Safety Board of Canada in determining the cause of the deaths.

Jets up against the clock

U.S. expats in city prepare to cast their ballots

American expats are making their voices heard from north of the border for the upcoming U.S. midterm elections.

Jean Dunmire sported a button emblazoned with the word “VOTE” and an American and Canadian flag as she walked out of the Bill and Helen Norrie Library Sunday afternoon. She had just registered to vote in the midterms from afar for the first time.

“I think it’s really important this time around because a lot of the senators and representatives in the House of Representatives are being reelected and I definitely want to see some changes. Things have gone way off the rails with (U.S. President Donald) Trump and he’s just destroying the country,” Dunmire said.

The 76-year-old moved to Lethbridge, Alta., from California in 1969 before settling in Manitoba in 1973. She’s voted in the last two presidential elections but felt it important to cast a ballot in the midterms owing to ongoing conflict in her home country.

The former assistant of late Elmwood–East Kildonan councillor Jason Schreyer is again running for the seat.

Chris Sweryda officially launched his campaign Saturday. He did so with the backdrop of a grocery program he runs, where food is sold near-cost out of St. Gerard School’s gym.

Rows of cereal, pasta sauce and chips filled tables ahead of the program’s afternoon opening. Sweryda created the pop-up with Schreyer months ahead of the former councillor’s April 2025 death.

The program sees roughly 500 people each day it’s open (which is every other week on Saturday), Sweryda said.

Steinbach Credit Union member warns others after scammer steals $10K

A Winnipeg single mother whose bank account was drained of nearly $10,000 says Steinbach Credit Union needs to warn its members about what she believes is a broader security problem.

The woman, who is not being named to protect her identity, said a scammer gained access to her account earlier this week after calling SCU’s contact centre, claiming to be her and successfully completing the credit union’s authentication process.

She said she knows of at least six others who have experienced similar incidents in which callers impersonate SCU account holders and pass the authentication checks.

The woman discovered something was wrong when her minor son asked why money had been transferred out of an account they jointly hold.
