Friday, West End Cultural Centre. Idiosyncratic Calgary singer-songwriter Chad VanGaalen plays a makeup show after a winter storm cancelled his scheduled November gig. He’s on the road supporting a new album called Diaper Island, as well as a series of cassettes. Tickets are $22.75 at Ticketmaster and the Folk Festival Music Store.

2. JESSE & AARON

Friday, Pyramid Cabaret. Jesse & Aaron are Jesse Murphy and Aaron Johnston, former members of eclectic, Grammy-nominated, New York electro-dance group Brazilian Girls, who will perform a DJ set as part of their Party Tour 2012. Tickets are $10 at Kustom Kulture.

3. RIDLEY BENT

Saturday, West End Cultural Centre. Roots rocker/hick-hop storyteller Ridley Bent is hosting his own version of a variety show as he invites guests including Keri Latimer, Andrina Turenne, Damon Mitchell and Chris Dunn to join him onstage for a series of collaborations. Tickets are $15 at the WECC, Ticketmaster, Music Trader and the Folk Festival Music Store.

Saturday, Exchange Community Church. Southwestern Ontario transplant Jenny Berkel is releasing her debut full length, Here on a Wire, this weekend with a collection of local artists she has met and recorded with since moving here in 2010. Admission is $10. The Exchange Community Church is located on the second floor of the Silvester Wilson Building at 75 Albert St.
