Police officer faces charges of domestic assault

A Winnipeg police officer has been charged after police said he broke into a woman’s home and attacked her.

Police were sent to a home on Wednesday shortly before 10:20 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service said in a Thursday news release. When officers arrived, they found the man, 20-year member in his 40s, inside a home assaulting the woman, the release said.

The man was taken into custody and the woman was given medical aid.

She told officers the man broke into the home, threatened to kill her and then attacked her.

Jets suspend goaltender Hellebuyck for failure to report to training camp

WINNIPEG - The Winnipeg Jets suspended goaltender Connor Hellebuyck on Wednesday night for failing to report to training camp.

The team said general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff would address the media Thursday morning. It did not specify the length of the suspension for the U.S. Olympic star.

Hellebuyck, a three-time Vezina Trophy winner and 2025 Hart Trophy winner as NHL MVP, publicly requested a trade from the team on Aug. 27.

In a statement posted on X by his agent, Ray Petkau, Hellebuyck said he had privately requested a trade “several months ago” and that he gave the organization time to address it “quietly and respectfully.”

Bell network problem behind 90-minute overnight 911 outage in Manitoba, five other provinces

A 911 outage that lasted about 90 minutes in Manitoba and other provinces Thursday morning was caused by a problem with Bell’s next-generation network amid concerns about recurring disruptions.

It’s not yet known how many Manitobans were unable to get through to 911 after the outage was detected at 2:13 a.m. Service was restored at 3:40 a.m., Bell spokeswoman Elise von Scheel said.

“We continue to investigate the root cause of the issue,” she wrote in an email.

A backup system was used during the disruption. Von Scheel said the “vast majority” of calls from Bell customers were immediately picked up by software and rerouted to 911 communications centres, or public safety answering points.
