It was looking as if the new mid-engine Chevrolet Corvette was the runaway winner for top automobile story of 2019, then last month, Elon Musk debuted the Tesla Cybertruck and had an engineer throw steel balls at its apparently unbreakable glass during the reveal. The windows on the truck not only cracked, the Cybertruck almost broke the internet.

If you’re a regular reader, you know my feelings about the new Cybertruck: I can sum it up with one word — dumb.

But, there’s absolutely no denying it has us talking.

Even folks who don’t pay an oil drop of attention to the auto world were piping in about the Cybertruck. According to Musk, more than 250,000 fans have placed a US$100 deposit on what I’ve called a cross between a DeLorean and a Dustbuster — so clearly I haven’t got a hot clue what is hot these days.

That said, I am quite excited about the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette. While it is a sure bet I’ll never be able to afford one, it’s also a sure bet a few locals will purchase the new C8 Corvette in the spring and it will be fun to spot one of these sleek supercars prowling the streets of Winnipeg or on display at local car shows next summer.

No matter how you look at it, 2020 and beyond is gearing up to be a great time to be a fan of all things automotive! With thanks to our friends from The Car Guide, here’s the Top 10 cars and trucks to debut in 2019.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

2020 Chevrolet Corvette

The all-new 2020 Chevrolet Corvette is quite a sight to behold. The breathtaking front fascia, the exquisite proportions that mark a radical departure from the C7 Corvette and the mid-mounted engine seen through an exotically styled glass panel blew away the 1,500 guests during the big reveal that took place inside a hangar in Santa Ana, Calif., this summer.

The 6.2-litre, naturally aspirated V-8 delivers as many as 495 horsepower via an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. Sadly, the manual gearbox will no longer be available.

2021 Aston Martin DBX

Described as “the SUV with the soul of a sports car,” the Aston Martin DBX promises unprecedented style and versatility. It is powered by a new version of the twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V-8 engine found in the DB11 and Vantage, generating 550 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. The DBX sprints from 0-100 km/h in 4.5 seconds.

2020 Audi RS 6 Avant

Performance enthusiasts have been waiting for it for a long time, and now it’s about to go on sale in Canada. The 2020 Audi RS 6 Avant arrives next year as a sinister-looking, 590-horsepower wagon and a total badass.

2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E

The launch of an electric Mustang in the form of a crossover is further proof that revolutions are anything but quiet. More than 50 years after the spectacular debut of the original Mustang, here comes an all-new, radically different version called Mach-E and powered by either a single- or dual-motor system. It provides a maximum range of 475 kilometres and starts at $50,495 in Canada.

2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500

Chevrolet The mid-engine 2020 Corvette made waves at its big reveal this past summer.

Early in the year at the Detroit Auto Show, Ford unveiled the most powerful production Mustang to ever hit the streets. The 2020 Shelby GT500 produces 760 horsepower and 625 pound-feet of torque from a supercharged 5.2-litre V-8 engine running on 93-octane premium gasoline. Just like the new Corvette, it does not offer a manual transmission.

2020 Mazda CX-30

After making its global debut in Geneva back in March, the all-new Mazda CX-30 landed in North America at the Los Angeles Auto Show this fall. Slotting between the CX-3 and CX-5, it’s a bigger, sexier and more upscale version of the former while featuring the same engines as the latter.

2020 MINI Cooper SE

The Cowley plant near Oxford hosted the world première of the first all-electric MINI Cooper. This car is motivated by a 181-horsepower motor and its lithium-ion battery enables a range of 230 kilometres. The MINI Cooper SE will go on sale in Canada on March 7 starting at $39,990.

2020 Polestar 2

In Geneva, Polestar unveiled its second car ever. Simply called Polestar 2, this versatile five-door model relies on two electric motors that produce a combined 408 horsepower and allow for an all-wheel drivetrain, while a 78-kWh battery pack provides an estimated driving range of 440 kilometres.

2020 Porsche Taycan

A direct response to the Tesla Model S, the all-new, all-electric Porsche Taycan is available in Turbo, Turbo S and 4S trim. Peak output is rated at 750 horsepower thanks to an overboost function, while acceleration from 0-100 km/h is clocked at 2.8 seconds.

2022 Tesla Cybertruck

Of course, the Tesla Cybertruck made our list! This revolutionary, concept-like electric pickup had everyone talking when it debuted in November.

Tesla has received more than 250,000 pre-orders already. The Cybertruck impresses with a base price of just US$39,900 and a maximum range of 800 kilometres in top trim.

Pierre Poilievre has a problem.

Canadians just don’t seem to be paying much attention to him anymore.

So, naturally, the Conservative Opposition leader has decided to turn up the volume.

At a recent party caucus retreat in Penticton, B.C., Poilievre delivered the familiar message: Canada is in trouble, Canadians are hurting and the Liberal government is making everything worse.

Sex sounds in stereo a sad score for singleton

Maureen Scurfield 5 minute read Yesterday at 2:00 AM CDT

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: I just moved into a big old house with two buddies who curl and play hockey with me. They have girlfriends, but I don’t.

I thought they’d be staying at their girlfriends’ places on nights they were “sleeping” together, but oh no!

So now I get to listen to the duelling sex noises of two couples, on weekends and some weeknights as well.

Do I have any rights here? I really don’t want to admit defeat and move back in with my parents, when feels like I just moved out. But it’s really uncomfortable to be the only guy with no sex life in this household, and then having to hear it, while it’s happening.

Siloam Mission, WFPS discussing on-site paramedic to reduce staggering number of emergency calls

Scott Billeck 4 minute read 2:00 AM CDT

Winnipeg’s fire-paramedic service and its largest homeless-serving organization are discussing what it would look like to station at least one paramedic at Siloam Mission, as emergency calls to the downtown facility surge.

The ongoing discussions come as Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews were dispatched 1,771 times during the first eight months of the year to the two adjacent Siloam properties at 303 Stanley St. and 300 Princess St.

WFPS said most of the calls were related to overdoses or other consequences of substance use, with the total nearly double the 854 calls recorded over the same period last year. By comparison, there were 831 calls during the same span in 2024, and 591 in 2023.

“The number of emergency calls isn’t sustainable for us as a service, but it’s certainly not sustainable for them as an agency trying to provide services,” WFPS chief Ryan Sneath told the Free Press. “And they recognize that they’re impacting emergency services, not them specifically, but the site in a significant way.”

Klein launches mayoral campaign with pledge to make Winnipeg safest city in Canada

Joyanne Pursaga 2 minute read 12:47 PM CDT

Mayoral candidate Kevin Klein says he would make Winnipeg the safest city in Canada by the end of his four-year term, if elected.

“Crime is happening all over the city and we have to take steps to address it,” Klein said at his first campaign announcement Friday morning.

He promised to hire 100 to 110 more police officers, which he believes would cost between $9 million and $11 million.

“Our (officer) numbers are way down. We need to fix that now,” he said, not offering a timeline to fulfil that goal.
