VICTORIA — Winnipeg’s Jennifer Jones did what Jones does best here this afternoon — she won by the narrowest of margins.
Playing Saskatchewan’s Stefanie Lawton in the Page playoff 3 vs. 4 game, Jones’s final rock of the 10th end hit the brakes just in time, skidding to a halt in the back of the four-foot and denying Lawton what would have been a game-tying steal.
Team Canada won by a final score of 8-6 and will now face Quebec’s Marie-France Larouche in the semifinal this evening (6 p.m., TSN). The winner tonight advances to tomorrow night’s final, where they will face B.C.’s Marla Mallett.
It was the second heart-stopping victory for Jones in as many days, coming on the heels of her win over P.E.I. in Friday’s tiebreaker game in which she stole the 10th and extra ends.
It was vintage Jones — and she knew it. “We like to keep the crowd excited,” Jones said afterward. “Most of our games are pretty close.
“Hopefully, we can just keep it going tonight. This is what we practise for and this is what we love to do — play in these big games. Win or lose, we sure had a lot of fun.”
Lawton, who was playing here under the shadow of her seriously ill mother back home, said her team was the author of their own problems by falling behind 4-1 to Jones early. “We ended up coming on strong in the last half,” said Lawton, “but it just wasn’t enough.”
