WINNIPEG — Don’t touch those sandbag — let the city do it.

When river levels permit, the City of Winnipeg will remove and dispose of sandbags, Mayor Sam Katz announced.

Until then, property owners should leave their defenses in place as river levels remain very high.

Flood waters in Winnipeg are expected to ebb very gradually over the next few weeks, even with favourable weather.

For the majority of flood-proofed properties, the process of sandbag removal can begin when river levels drop below 18-19 feet at James Avenue. The river is currently at about 20 feet.

For some of the lower-lying properties, sandbags will have to remain longer.

Sandbags that have not come in contact with river water will be made available to the public; more information will be provided in the coming weeks.
