WINNIPEG – The Winnipeg Goldeyes baseball club has been named Organization of the Year by the Northern League.
The Goldeyes won the award for the fourth time in seven years; the team is the only four-time winner of the award since it began in 2003.
“This is an award to be shared by everyone associated with the Goldeyes and I speak on behalf of the entire organization when I say we are honoured,” president and CEO Sam Katz said in a press release.
“From top to bottom, this is a very solid organization. It is part of a very strong league, one that will become stronger next year with the addition of two more teams and will become even stronger in the years to come as more and more fans get to know this amazing product we call Northern League baseball.”
The Goldeyes made the playoffs for the 14th time in 16 seasons and led the NL in fan attendance for the 10th straight year with a total of 278,099 fans in 45 home games. Also for a 10th straight year, the Goldeyes led all 63 teams in independent baseball with an average per-game attendance of 6,180.
“To know you do a good job is one thing, but when you are told this by your Northern League brethren, it becomes something else entirely,” said general manager Andrew Collier.
“Each and every person that works for the Goldeyes, from our full-time staff to our game-day staff, had a hand in winning this award and it’s a tribute to all that they do to have once again been recognized. It’s also a tribute to our amazing fans, for without them, we wouldn’t even be here.”
Voting for the award was conducted by managers, coaches, players, radio announcers, media and general managers.
Earlier this month, pitcher Ace Walker, second baseman Josh Asanovich and designated hitter Juan Diaz were named to the Northern League All-Star Team. Walker was named NL pitcher of the year, infielder Adam Frost was named NL rookie of the year and general manager Andrew Collier earned his fifth NL executive of the Year award in eight years. Finally, just yesterday, Walker was named NL Pitcher of the Year.
