WINNIPEG — They’ve sliced up their roster, named a starting quarterback and lost their long-snapping specialist for the season. And that was the relatively easy part.

Now the Winnipeg Blue Bombers have 10 days to get ready for their regular-season opener.

Bomber head coach Paul LaPolice named former B.C. Lions’ quarterback Buck Pierce as his starter following practice Wednesday at Rods Field while the club announced the release of six players, with another eight not being formally announced but showing up on the transaction wire on the Canadian Football League website.

Offically let go were quarterback Adam DiMichele, defensive linemen LaDarien Scott and Remond Willis, receivers Willie Foster and Scott McHenry, running back Emmanuel Marc and defensive back Nick Kordic.

Showing up as released on the league website were linebackers Merrill Johnson and Thaine Carter, receivers Chris Davis and Jamayel Smith, defensive backs Donald Brown, Jr., Bernard Hicks, Jerry-Ralph Jules and offensive lineman Chris Kowalczuk.

All eight of those players attended practice on Wednesday, although Carter and Brown, Jr. were limited by injury.

Meanwhile, LaPolice confirmed that Chris Cvetkovic, their veteran long-snapping specialist, will be lost for the season with a knee injury. Rookie offensive lineman Adam Bestard, a 2009 draft pick by the club, filled in for Cvetkovic in Sunday’s preseason loss to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and will be asked to handle those chores all year.

The Bombers 2010 regular season opens with back-to-back home games, beginning Friday, July 2 against Hamilton with the Toronto Argonauts here on July 9.
