— JOVON’S JOB: After flirting with the idea of looking elsewhere for a kick returner, the Bombers have decided to go back to all-star Jovon Johnson.
The decision was made final Wednesday, when the club released seven players. On that list was import kick returner Travis Shelton. In Sunday’s pre-season loss in Hamilton, the speedster from Temple did not impress enough to warrant a spot and mishandled a punt which led to a Tiger-Cats touchdown. Shelton missed most of main camp with a hamstring injury, too.
"It’s hard when you get injured," head coach Paul LaPolice said. "We would have liked two games for him to try to catch the punts… we just felt we’ll go with Jovon to do that."
— MORE CUTS: Also released were import linebackers Rian Wallace and SaMario Houston. Wallace, a former Pittsburgh Steeler, was never in the plans for a middle linebacker spot (the team tried him at defensive end), while Houston found himself behind Marcellus Bowman and Courtney Smith in the weak-side LB position. "Just because you played in the NFL, it doesn’t always translate to the Canadian Football League," LaPolice said of Wallace.
Import DB Jason Tate, import DT Jarrell Chandler, non-import LT John Hashem, and non-import LB Giancarlo Rapanaro were also among the cuts Tuesday morning.
