CHARLOTTETOWN —Manitoba’s Cathy Overton-Clapham defeated Team Canada’s Jennifer Jones 8-5 here tonight in what was the most highly anticipated matchup of the 2011 Canadian women’s curling championship.

Overton-Clapham, fired by Jones last spring as third on the three-time defending Canadian champion, played one of the greatest games in the history of her storied curling career, blistering Jones with hits, draws, rolls and a decisive pick for a deuce in the ninth end en route to a memorable win here Wednesday night before a raucous crowd inside the Charlottetown Civic Centre and what is expected to have been a monstrous television audience across Canada.

The win was meaningless in the standings for Manitoba, who were just 2-6 coming into the night and were already eliminated from the playoffs.

But it was a costly loss for Jones, who went from being alone in second place at 6-2 and in control of her team’s destiny prior to the Manitoba game to now being 6-3 and mired in a four-way logjam for second heading into the final day of the round-robin on Thursday
