Overton-Clapham rides win into marquee match

CHARLOTTETOWN – Winnipeg’s Cathy Overton-Clapham will head into her highly anticipated grudge match with Jennifer Jones here Wednesday night (TSN, 5:30 p.m.) off a much-needed winning effort.

Overton-Clapham and the rest of Team Manitoba had their best game of the week Wednesday afternoon at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, waxing Ontario’s Rachel Homan 10-6 in nine ends.

The win improved Manitoba to 2-6 and ended a five-game losing streak that went all the way back to last Saturday night, when they last won a game here, against lowly NWT/Yukon.

Ontario, meanwhile, continued their spiral, falling to 6-3 with their third loss in four games and second of the day.

Team Canada’s Jones beat Ontario earlier Wednesday.

Overton-Clapham was relieved to finally get back on a winning note. “That was our best game by far,” Overton-Clapham said. “That was more like the team that won the provincials. It was nice we were able to regroup after a really slow start to the week.

“It will be fun coming into tonight off a well-played game.”

While Overton-Clapham is eliminated from playoff contention, she does have some stakes on the table tonight against Jones. With a third win, she would avoid the record set by Barb Spencer in 2009 as the worst team Manitoba has ever sent to this event. Spencer went 2-9.

And Overton-Clapham could also throw a wrench in Jones’s playoff plans. Canada has won three in a row and sits alone in second place at 6-2 heading into tonight, with a berth in the coveted 1 vs 2 page playoff game under their control right now.

A third loss tonight, however, would drop Canada back into the pack and put significant pressure on Jones heading into tomorrow’s final day of the round-robin.

Saskatchewan lost their first game here Wednesday afternoon, losing 7-4 to Nova Scotia to fall to 8-1. The win improved Nova Scotia to 5-3. Alberta’s Shannon Kleibrink and Ontario are tied for third place at 6-3. The top 4 teams at the end of the round-robin tomorrow night advance to the weekend playoff round.
