CHARLOTTETOWN – Winnipeg’s Jennifer Jones won her third in a row here this morning and vaulted into second place at the Canadian womens curling championship.
Team Canada’s Jones defeated Ontario’s Rachel Homan 7-4 Wednesday morning to improve to 6-2. The loss drops Ontario to 6-2 as well, but Jones now wins the tiebreaker between the two teams based on the round-robin victory.
If the event were to end right now, Jones would play Saskatchewan’s Amber Holland in the page playoff 1 vs 2 game Friday night. Holland improved to 8-0 with a 10-2 beating of Newfoundland this morning.
Jones is 10-0 in playoff games over the last three years at this event. She last lost a playoff game at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in 2007.
Jones busted open a 4-4 tie with Ontario with a three-ender in the eighth end, set up by a brilliant first four rocks by her front end of lead Dawn Askin and second Jill Officer.
Ontario has now lost two of their last three games and their brash 21-year-old skip looked bewildered on the ice this morning as Jones took the youngster to school. Jones out-shot Homan 89-67 through the first eight ends.
Jones is now off the ice until tonight when she takes on disgruntled former teammate Cathy Overton-Clapham of Manitoba. The most widely anticipated contest of this event will be broadcast live by TSN, beginning at 5:30 p.m. CT.
Manitoba, who are 1-6 and already eliminated from the playoffs, will first have to play Ontario, however, on this afternoon’s draw.
