More homegrown help will soon be on the way for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
The club announced Thursday it has traded long-snapper Taylor Inglis to the Edmonton Eskimos for a pair of draft picks in the 2011 CFL Canadian Draft in May.
The Bombers receive fifth (32nd overall) and sixth-round (41st overall) choices for Inglis, who appeared in 17 games last season as the club’s long-snapper. The fifth-round choice was originally traded to Edmonton in exchange for the rights to Kelly Butler.
“Being able to secure two more draft picks in the 2011 draft is a key for us. We have maintained the notion that young Canadian talent is crucial to success, and this will help us with that process. We thank Taylor for his professionalism and work for the Blue Bombers throughout the 2010 season and wish him and his family all the best,” said Vice-President and General Manager Joe Mack in a press release.
Inglis, 27, was signed by the Bombers last July following his release by the Eskimos and after veteran snapper Chris Cvetkovic had gone down with a season-ending injury and was superb in handling those chores in 2010. But with Cvetkovic healthy again the Bombers had an extra asset in Inglis they could move for more picks in their attempt to upgrade their Canadian content.
Inglis will return home to play again with the Eskimos after suiting up for them for five seasons after a career with both the University of Alberta and Edmonton Wildcats.
Winnipeg holds the first overall pick in the CFL Canadian Draft in May as well as first picks in the third and fourth rounds and now has the fifth and sixth-round choices added today. All told, the Bombers will select 1st, 17th, 24th, 32nd and 41st.
