Parliament’s most vocal opponent of Canada’s long-gun registry didn’t need to haul out any weapons to hold on to Portage-Lisgar, arguably the safest Tory seat in Manitoba.

Candice Hoeppner won her second-straight victory in the south-central Manitoba riding, as the Conservatives achieved a majority across Canada.

“We’re pretty excited here. We’re a pretty happy group of people,” Hoeppner said over the phone fromn Portage la Prairie.

“Canadians have sent a very clear message: They want stability and a govenment that will focus on their priorities and we have the opportunity to do that now”

Portage-Lisgar has been been held by the Conservative Party or its right-of-centre predecessors since the seat’s inception in 1997. Hoeppner took over the reins in Portage-Lisgar after the retirement of one-time Tory leadership candidate Brian Pallister.

Hoppner easily delivered a knockout punch to second-place contestant Mohamed Alli of the NDP. Liberal M.J. Willard and Jerome Dondo of the Christian Heritage Party and Matthew Friesen of the Greens also ran in Portage-Lisgar.
