Toews to represent Provencher for fifth time

Manitoba's highest-ranking Conservative MP had no trouble holding on to his seat. For the fifth straight election, Vic Toews has been elected in Provencher.

Manitoba’s highest-ranking Conservative MP had no trouble holding on to his seat. For the fifth straight election, Vic Toews has been elected in Provencher.

The federal Public Safety Minister and former Manitoba Tory MLA dispatched former NDP cabinet Minister Al Mackling. Toews was well on his way to meeting the pluarality he enjoyed he enjoyed in 2008, when he won by 18,356 votes. He was even more excited by his party’s overall fortunes,

“We certainly wanted to do better than what we left aprliament at. This is very ecnouraging, as we’ve been working very hard,” Toews said over the phone from Steinbach.

“I predicted the NDP would increase their vote and the Liberals would tank, and that’s what it looks like has happened. And that’s representative across the country.”

Toews was first elected to federal office in 2000, when he knocked off Liberal David Iftody. He was re-elected in 2004, 2006 and 2008 and served as federal Treasury Board president before becoming Public Safety Minister.

He will remain the senior MP for Manitoba.

Liberal Terry Hayward, Janine Gibson of the Greens, Ric Lim of the Pirate Party and David Reimer of the Christian Heritage Party also ran in Provencher.
