WINNIPEG – Paul LaPolice says there’s no reason to haul any worry to the lake this long weekend — Buck Pierce is fine.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers head coach said his starting quarterback, who was forced to leave Thursday’s 25-20 win over the B.C. Lions in the fourth quarter, is doing better and should be ready to practice when the team gets back to work Monday.

Pierce suffered what the club is calling a left calf strain. It’s the third different leg injury he’s suffered this year and the second time in three starts he’s had to leave a game early.

“He was fine today in meetings; we’ll get treatment the next two days and see how he is,” LaPolice told reporters Friday. “We’ll see how it goes.”

The coach wasn’t heaping a lot of praise on his group after watching the game film from Thursday, instead choosing to keep a sober position regarding the fortunes of the club on the field. He was disappointed with the execution on offence through stretches of the game, but in the same breath, he said he was pleased his club didn’t turn the ball over — a big reason why the Bombers are currently the talk of the town.

Winnipeg, 4-1 to start for the first time since 2003, have equaled their win total from a year ago in the first month of the season.

LaPolice paused when asked if he’s had a chance — unlikely given the events surrounding the sudden passing of coach Richard Harris this week — to look at the big picture and take some enjoyment from his place in the standings.

“I think we felt we had a good football team here,” he said. “We felt we could do some damage and play well. We’re a missed field goal from being 5-0, a one-point loss is our only loss. Our battle is going to be to continue to improve each week.

“That may sound like a broken record, but there’s a lot of work to be done.”

The club also confirmed that services for Harris are scheduled to take place on Sunday, Aug. 7. The time and location are still being finalized.
